Thar Electric – Could get a camera instead of ORVMs

Mahindra thar ev

We have seen on multiple concept cars, brands showcase funky and sleek ORVMs. However, Mahindra has showcased a camera instead of any ordinary ORVM. But will that come into production? Probably yes! Thar being an EV, we can expect cameras instead of conventional ORVMs. Also, we can see more EV cars with futuristic technology to come by 2026. So in terms of features and technology, Mahindra will try to be at par with the competition. But how will those cameras work? Well the cameras will transmit data onto the screens inside the car which will help drivers to get less distracted.

Flat dashboard with advanced technology!

Talking about the interiors, the Thar EV will feature a futuristic design language for the interiors. It will get a flat dashboard with a minimalistic design approach. The touchscreen system will be integrated nicely with the dashboard so it won’t create any sort of distraction. Another cool feature of the Thar EV will be the new steering wheel. As shown on the concept, the Thar EV will get Mahindra’s next gen steering wheel. Just like Tata’s recent steering wheels, Mahindra’s steering wheel will also feature illuminated brand badging. Behind the steering wheel would be an advanced digital instrument cluster. The Thar being an off roader will display plenty of off road information on the instrument cluster. It will be a fully customizable, HD quality display.

Thar Electric – Will be available as a 5-door

thar ev

One of the best things about the Thar electric is the fact that the SUV will be available in 5-door version. As of now, the current Thar is only available in three door version with not an impressive rear seat space. In fact a 5-door version is in testing and will be launched soon. Talking about the Thar electric, the 5-door version will not only occupy 5 full size adults, but will also offer more comfort. How? The Thar will be an EV based on Mahindra’s INGLO platform which is designed for maximum space with a flat floor. Overall, we can expect a spacious cabin inside the Thar EV.

Will be based on the new INGLO platform

INGLO platform

Now let’s get a bit in detail to understand the INGLO platform. The INGLO platform will be used by many upcoming Mahindra electric SUVs. According to Mahindra, the INGLO platform will help them to build SUVs that measure between 4368mm and 4735mm in length. The platform will use Volkswagen MEB components which will be in the form of electric motors. In fact the platform will also meet all the safety regulations and Mahindra will expect 5-star ratings in the crash test. Lastly, Mahindra will be targeting a ramp breakover angle of 20 degrees and a ground clearance of 218mm! Won’t that be impressive for an off roader like the Thar?

Thar Electric – Expected wheelbase

The other most important benefit of the INGLO platform will be the wheelbase. The Thar EV will be a long SUV and hence it will have a longer wheelbase. According to reports, the INGLO platform can produce a wheelbase of around 2775mm to 2975mm. For reference, the XUV700, which is already a spacious SUV, has a wheelbase of 2750mm. Also, the flat floor will add on more sense of space inside the Thar EV.

Will be powered by Volkswagen Electric Motors

app550 motor

As mentioned above, the Thar EV will be powered by Volkswagen’s MEB electric motors. VW calls it APP550 Motor and the first Mahindra SUV to come with this motor will be the Mahindra BE05. Talking about the power figures, the APP550 electric motors are capable of producing 286bhp and 550Nm of peak torque. However, it will be interesting to see if Mahindra offers the Thar EV with the similar powertrain or not.

Thar Electric – Battery pack

Talking about the battery pack, Mahindra will be using a battery pack with BYD cells. For the Thar EV, the battery pack size would be approximately around 80kWh. Unlike the MNC battery pack on the XUV400, Thar EV will get a battery pack with LFP chemistry. The LFP based battery packs have its own benefits like longer battery life and they are cost effective as well.

Expected range

The ultimate benefit of the INGLO platform will result in a longer range. The claimed WLTP range is around 500kms while the expected real world range would be around 350kms. The 80kWh battery pack will be efficient to offer an impressive real life range.
