What is IMV 0?

As the world is inclining towards EVs, Toyota has decided to stick to more ICE powered vehicles. In fact, they even ditched the modern Monocoque chassis by investing in developing the new old-school ladder on frame platform. It is the new IMV 0 platform and the vehicle showcased on the platform was a car with single cab. Talking about the IMV 0 platform, it has the DNA of IMV platform which does duties to some popular Toyota SUVs like Fortuner, Hilux and the Innova Crysta. The IMV 0 platform showcased is a versatile platform with a single-cab chassis that can be used for multiple bodies for different uses. The flatbed can be bolted with multiple bodies and can be converted into – food trucks, coffee bar, camper for safaris, and even as a mountain rescue ambulance.

Why IMV 0?

Well, Toyota admits that their SUVs as well as pick-up trucks have become expensive over the time. However, with the new affordable IMV 0 platform, they will be able to develop equally capable products at an affordable price. The IMV 0 platform will use lighter materials than the IMV platform. Also, eliminating features will also play a key role in the cost-cutting process. Yoshiki Konishi, the President of Toyota Daihatsu Engineering and Manufacturing (TDEM) in the Tokyo Motor Show said,  “Over time, with additional features and regulations, the price went up and some of our original customers cannot afford our products. That is the reason we have now decided to introduce a new concept which we call the IMV 0 that can serve the needs of everyday people and give them new opportunities.”

Now although buyers may ask for more features, Toyota believes that many IMV 0 customers in the ASEAN region will use the pick-up for hardcore utility and will readily sacrifice on some features for a price benefit. Also, the brand said that they will be very smart about what to keep and what to eliminate.

Affordable Toyota Fortuner?

Adding to the projects based on the IMV 0 platform, Toyota said that the IMV 0 platform will not just be limited to pick up trucks and SUVs like Fortuner that is currently based on IMV platform, could also be built on this new platform. Their statement – “That is a different project and we are cooking something right now” is a clear indication that an affordable Toyota Fortuner is on the cards.

What will power the new Toyota Fortuner?

With an affordable platform, Toyota will definitely try to keep the overall cost of the SUV in check. The brand may offer the new Fortuner with Innova’s smaller 2.4-litre engine instead of Fortuner’s current 2.8-litre diesel engine. The other option could also include a strong hybrid powertrain. Is EV a great idea? Although it is, Toyota is in no mood of electrifying the IMV 0 platform.
