JTP, the venture of Tata Motors with Jayem Automobiles was particularly formed to deliver performance oriented cars. Jayem Automobiles were tasked to tune the Tata cars and extract maximum performance out of them. The result was Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP. They not only worked with the engine but also worked with suspension setup and other mechanicals. However it was a big disappointment for all the petrolheads when the venture was closed. Fast forward in the Auto Expo 2023, Tata Motors for the first time ever after the Tiago/Tigor JTP showcased a performance oriented car. And it is none other than the Altroz Racer Edition. The specs it packed & the features it offered had created the hype as it was going to be India’s true hot hatch. But, since then not even once Tata Motors has spoken anything about the Altroz Racer Edition and looked completely busy with the facelifts of Nexon, Harrier and Safari. So will they plan about this hot hatch after the launch of Harrier/Safari facelifts? Or will it end the journey as a concept only car? Well, let’s find out.

Tata Altroz Racer Edition – Engine Specifications

Let’s begin with what most of you are interested to know about, the performance. The Altroz Racer Edition was showcased with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. No it isn’t the i-turbo engine of the regular Altroz but in fact it is the Nexon’s 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 118bhp and 170Nm of torque. The other big change was that the hatch was showcased with a 6-speed manual transmission which could be the same unit of the Nexon. It is a power packed engine and with the light weight of Altroz (compared to Nexon) this engine was the perfect choice for all the enthusiasts.

Exterior

In terms of exterior the hood and the roof of the car was finished in black while the rest of the body was wearing a red shade. Also, to make it look sportier the hatch had graphics on the hood and the roof.  Other than that, all the chrome elements were blacked out which is a mandatory change that almost every automaker makes to differentiate their normal cars from the sporty versions! This also includes the blacked out 16-inch alloy wheels. The wheels however were wearing the Yokohama rubber to provide grip to handle the additional power. At the rear the car was equipped with a sportier and chunky rear spoiler. Rest, the car was exactly the same like any other Altroz.

Inside the car, things change drastically. To start with, the seats were covered with leatherette upholstery with some subtle red and white inserts. Even the seats and the armrest had red stitching to add the sense of sportiness. Red inserts were seen around the centre console and the AC vents on the dash. Other elements like the glossy plastic on the dashboard and the door handles were finished in gloss black. The big and noticeable change was the 10.25-inch touchscreen and a single pane electric sunroof! The touchscreen itself was super responsive and intuitive to use. Even the instrument cluster for that matter was completely new and digital. Overall the interiors were offering that sportier appeal and sense of extra performance that it was holding under the hood.

Features

In terms of features the car was equipped with ventilated seats, electric sunroof with voice command, wireless charger, air purifier, 10.25 infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, drive modes, and automatic climate control. Also the car showcased was equipped with 6-Airbags.

When will it launch?

Now the most anticipated question, when will the Tata Altroz Racer Edition launch? So initially the speculations were that Tata Motors could launch the Altroz Racer Edition soon after the Auto Expo 2023, alongside the Altroz iCNG. The speculations were later shifted to  the end of this year. However we can still not see any signs of the launch. Tata Motors is now supposed to stay busy with the launches of Harrier & Safari facelifts and the EVs like Harrier, Safari and the Punch. Post that we could expect them to launch the Altroz Racer in 2024. But, if not launched next year, we could probably never get to see the Racer Edition of the Altroz and it will be remembered just as a prototype.
