The Volkswagen Polo is one car that defined the German brand in the country. It was the brand’s only hatchback and also the most affordable option. Last year, after 12 years, Volkswagen axed the Polo due to decreasing demand. Still, people have been asking the German brand to launch the new-generation model in India. We have some good news for such people. The Polo is coming back but with a twist. What is the Twist? Let’s talk about the Polo GTi India.

Volkswagen is planning to bring the Polo GTi to India in limited numbers through the CBU route. In recent years, the German brand has tested success with a limited number of cars sold at high prices. Volkswagen has sold the T-Roc and Tiguan All-Space using this strategy. So Volkswagen is mulling launching the new Polo GTi under the government’s 2,500-unit homologation-free rule for CBU imports.

Specifications

The Polo GTi is based on the new MQB A0 platform. Specification-wise, the Polo GTi comes with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 201bhp. It comes with a 7-speed DSG gearbox and an electronic differential. Volkswagen claims that the Polo GTi can do the 0 to 100kmph sprint in just 6.5 seconds, which is quick.

Non-GTi Polo not coming back

However, Volkswagen clearly stated that it doesn’t plan to bring back the Non-GTi Polo to India. Instead, it plans to focus on C-SUVs which are the way forward in the country. The new Polo is also longer than 4m at 4.053m. Removing just 0.5 would require a lot of re-engineering and that wouldn’t make business sense to the German brand. So the Non-GTi Polo is not coming to India.
