Why the Innova Crysta sells better than the HyCross?

Innova has been one name that has ruled the MPV segment for the last two decades. Innova has practically annihilated all its competitors in this segment. Last year, Innova took a big step up by launching the HyCross. With the HyCross, Innova has upscaled the Innova brand. Still, in May 2023, Toyota sold more units of the Crysta compared to HyCross. Toyota sold 4,786 units of the Crysta, compared to 2,990 units of the HyCross. So why is Crysta selling better than the HyCross? In today’s article, let’s talk about Innova Crysta vs HyCross sales. 

Diesel engine

In bigger SUVs and more so in MPVs, people have traditionally preferred diesel over petrol. This is because of the extra grunt and the superior mileage provided by diesel engines. So it was a big surprise when Toyota discontinued the diesel engine on the HyCross. Even though a hybrid engine does have its pros, it will take some time for people to get used to the idea of an Innova petrol. 

Brand name

Even though the HyCross shares the Innova nameplate with the Crysta. The Crysta being longer in circulation, is more synonymous with the Innova nameplate. It will take some time for the HyCross to grab the same amount of recognition as the Crysta. 

Toyota Innova Crysta vs HyCross – Supply constraints

Toyota is facing major supply constraints with the Innova HyCross. It has officially closed the bookings for the hybrid ZX and ZX(O) variants. This has put a major dent in the sales of the HyCross, as most people prefer to buy the top variants in a new car. So it seems like the Crysta will continue to do better than the HyCross till Toyota finds a solution to its supply constraints.
