The EV revolution is slowly and steadily taking place in the Indian market. It is not as rapid as some of the other global markets, but it is happening. The problem with EVs is that affordable options are quite scarce. But there is hope with several manufacturers working on affordable electric options. Now reports are claiming that Volkswagen is working on a Rs 15 lakh EV. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Rs 15 lakh Volkswagen EV.

New details

15 lakh Volkswagen EV

According to media reports, Volkswagen is developing a new entry-level EV that could be named the “ID.1”. This new entry-level model is targeting a price tag of  £17,000 (15 lakhs INR) and will sit below the ID.2, all in the brand’s EV portfolio. Volkswagen is yet to finalise the name, but there are high chances this EV could be called “ID.1”. It will be based on a new electric platform that will also underpin some Skoda and Cupra cars.

Expected specifications

In terms of powertrain, this affordable model could get a smaller battery and lower range. It could get a claimed range of 321km, which is not bad for an affordable EV. The VW group is also working on developing unified cell technology that can be applied through its several brands and reduce costs by 50%; for this, different chemistries will be used for each tier. So entry-level models could use cheaper materials leading to less range and losing fast charging capabilities.

So coming to the important question, Will it be launched in India? The brand has not stated it outrightly, but there is hope. According to the Head of Volkswagen, Thomas Schafer, the EV could be manufactured in India to keep costs down. This is because VW already has a manufacturing plant in India, and also the cost of manufacturing will be lower in India.
