Why is no one buying this affordable car?

The affordable price category continues to be a major segment in the country. Most of the cars in this segment easily rack upwards of 10k sales in a month. Still, there is one car that is not even able to achieve 5000, actually not even 1000. Which car are we talking about? It is the Renault Kwid. So why is no one buying the Kwid? Sales numbers

The Renault Kwid is seeing lacklustre sales in the last few months. In May 2023, Renault sold only 797 units of the Kwid. Just for context, Maruti sold 9, 368 units of the Alto (Kwid’s biggest competitor) in the same time frame. The Kwid is not even doing 10% sales of the Alto. So what could be the reason for such low sales? Hang around as we try to figure it out.

Reasons

So why aren’t people buying the Kwid? There are several reasons behind it. One is the high competition in this segment mainly from the Maruti cars. At the price of Kwid, you can buy cars like the Alto, S-Presso, Celerio etc. So buyers prefer a Maruti car over a Renault one for the reliability and peace of mind it offers. Another thing could be the outdated design of the Kwid. Kwid’s biggest rival, the Alto, recently got a major update. Renault should also update the Kwid if it needs to compete with Alto. Also, recently the 800cc engine was discontinued, which has hurt the Kwid. 

Renault Kwid 2023 – What Renault could do?

Renault will need to ramp up its efforts in the Indian market. For a manufacturer that has been in India for such a long time, it only sold 4,625 units in May 2023. So Renault needs to bring some fresh new products to India. One such product could be the new-gen Duster. But that is also still a couple of years away. TIll then, Renault should bring in some CBU or CKD products just to improve its image in India. According to reports, Renault has plans to bring Arkana, Megane E-tech, Koelos etc to India. Hopefully, this improves Renault’s fortunes in the country.
