The Hyundai Kona EV is a popular electric vehicle around the world, but it hasn’t been able to click in the Indian market. Hyundai has even launched its facelift outside India and is now even working on the new model. But in India, it is still selling the pre-facelift model. Poor response
Kona has struggled for sales in the market. In March, Hyundai sold 0 units of the Kona, which is just abysmal for a car like it. At least in June, Hyundai sold 100 units, which is still poor compared to the Nexon and ZS EV. The main reason behind this has been its outdated interior and features. Its interiors are also quite cramped compared to the competition.
Price
The Kona is quite expensive for what it offers. It’s a CBU car leading to high taxes on it. Hyundai has given it some price cuts, but still, that has not helped its cause. In India, Hyundai sells only one variant of the Kona which is priced at Rs 25.12 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai). At this price, you can get the ZS EV, which offers modern interiors and features. If you want something affordable, you can buy the Nexon EV and XUV400. So the Kona just feels out of place at this price point.
Hyundai Kona EV – Competition
Another reason why Hyundai may be ignoring the Kona EV in India is due to the competition in the market. India is a highly competitive market for electric vehicles, with a number of manufacturers vying for market share. With many other options available, people are preferring the Nexon EV or the ZS EV over the Kona. Hyundai seems to have understood it and is using the Kona as a stop-gap before it launches its affordable EV options in India.
