Mahindra Thar has skyrocketed in popularity in the last few years. Since its new generation, the Thar is raking in amazing sales for a lifestyle SUV. Recently Mahindra achieved the 1 lakh sales milestone on the Thar, which is remarkable for such a niche vehicle. Seeing this success, Mahindra is expanding the variant lineup of the Thar. Earlier this year, Mahindra launched the RWD variant of the Thar, and now it seems to be extending the lineup again. So what is this new variant? Let’s talk about the Thar 4×4 price.

According to Autocar, Mahindra is working on a new 4×4 base variant for the Thar. This new variant is likely to be named AX AC and could see the depletion of some features from the AX(O) variant. Its feature list could be similar to the AX variant Mahindra had introduced at the launch but later discontinued due to safety norms. This AX AC variant will get proper front-facing forward seats. 

Specifications

The Thar currently comes with three engine options. We have two diesel engine options, a 1.5-litre diesel and a 2.2-litre diesel engine option. Also, there is a 2.0-litre petrol engine option. We expect Mahindra to offer the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine on this variant. The 1.5-litre might feel a bit underpowered for the 4×4 variant. Also, we expect Mahindra to only offer a manual transmission on this variant.

Currently, the 4×4 variant of the Thar starts from Rs 16.33 lakh for the petrol variant, and the diesel starting price is Rs 17.28 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). So we expect the new variant to come to around Rs 15 lakh for petrol and 16 lakhs for diesel. This price drop seems to be because of the launch of the Maruti Jimny.
