The EV space is gathering momentum in the country. Tata already has four EVs in its portfolio and other manfactueres are also bringing EVs like the Hyundai IONIQ-5 and Kia EV6. However manufacturers like Maruti have lagged behind with no EVs in sight. However, Maruti is working on an EV in collaboration with Toyota. This EV is still a long way away, but Maruti is expected to reveal the concept at the Auto Expo of 2023. In today’s article, let’s talk about Maruti’s first EV 2023.

Maruti is on an aggressive car launching spree and it is expected to carry forward the momentum at the Auto Expo of 2023. Maruti has plans to showcase as many as 16 models at the Expo. One of them will be Maruti’s first EV codenamed the YY8. Maruti will be showcasing the YY8 concept at the Auto Expo 2023, Maruti had similarly showcased the Futuro-e concept at the Auto Expo of 2020. 

What else do we know?

The YY8 will not be an affordable small EV, rather it is a big SUV expected to measure over 4.2 metres and sit on a wheelbase of 2700mm. Also, it will be based on the 27PL platform – a derivative of the 40PL, a global Toyota EV platform. Being a ground-up platform, it will offer that extra battery space and a spacious cabin. The YY8 will be developed for international and domestic markets at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. 

Maruti EV 2023 – Specifications

The YY8 is expected to come with several battery packs and drive options. It could come with two battery packs – a 48kWh unit delivering an approx range of 400km and a 59kWh unit delivering an approx range of 500km. Drive options could include a two-wheel drive setup and a four-wheel setup. Maruti and Toyota are also expected to source LFP blade cells from BYD. These blade cells are known for their higher density and better range. This will be give Maruti’s EV a competitive advantage over other EVs in this segment.

Launch and pricing

Maruti will be displaying the first concept of the YY8 at the Auto Expo. However, the production version is still a few years away from seeing the light of day. According to sources, the YY8 is expected to be launched in early 2025. What about the pricing? Maruti has plans to price the YY8 somewhere around Rs 13 lakhs to Rs 15 lakhs range, pitting it against the MG ZS EV, Tata Nexon and Hyundai Kona.
