The SUV segment has gained a crazy amount of momentum in the Indian market. All types of SUVs are in great demand, with a waiting period of several months on popular SUVs. So what could be the next trend in the market? The next trend could be the pickup segment. Why pickups? Other developed markets like the USA are already seeing the pickup trend, and we could see that in India. Toyota already has the Hilux in India, and MG could bring the Extender pickup to India. In today’s article, let’s talk about MG’s next car.

MG’s new car – Design

The Extender comes with an aggressive design language. It gets a huge grille with a lot of chrome elements adding the bling factor. Besides the grille, we have three-step LED headlamps with LED DRLs above them. What about the side profile? The side profile looks like a typical pickup with a lot of curves and creases.

Specifications

The MG Extender is based on the Maxus T90 platform. So why is this relevant? The T90 platform is the upgraded version of the T60 platform that underpins the Gloster. What about the engine specifications? Globally, the Extender comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine capable of 159bhp and 375Nm of torque. This same engine also powers the Gloster in India. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic.

Features have become a vital part of the car-buying experience in India. MG already knows, and even the global Extender comes loaded with a decent amount of features. It comes with a 10-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, lane-keep assist, stability control, TPMS, and Hill assist. In India, MG could give it some more features to attract customers.

Will it come to India?

The Hilux has not particularly set the sales chart on fire. However, as mentioned above, the pickup segment could be the next big thing in India. Could MG take the risk of launching the Extender? MG has shown that it can launch cars in unique segments, so we can expect this pickup in the country. MG could undercut the Hilux as it did with the Gloster against the Fortuner.
