India’s favorite MPV, the Toyota Innova Crysta has always managed to stay the best in the business. It has created a brand of itself with multiple advantages including the Toyota badge. However, things are about to change. Why do we say so? The car which is renowned for its reliability, comfort, and safety has found itself in a situation right now. Toyota has stopped taking bookings for the diesel variants of the Innova Crysta. Could this mean that this very popular variant could discontinue? Let’s discuss this in today’s article.

Making way for new Innova HyCross?

Toyota is set to bring in a new-generation Innova which it could name the Innova HyCross. This one would be a completely new product offering strong hybrid capabilities and is touted to come mated to a 2.0-litre engine. What about the price? Strong hybrid engines are on the expensive side but Toyota has been focusing on localization for this one. It is likely to start from Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Moving to the practicality and space, the new car would have an increased wheelbase compared to the Crysta. It could help the new one to be more spacious and comfortable. Moreover, this one will come based on a monocoque platform, unlike the currently-available ladder-on-frame MPV. When can it launch? The car is most likely to be unveiled in November and we can expect a proper launch next year. Read our article on the Innova HyCross to know more details.

Toyota Innova diesel – EV era & cleaner cars?

Toyota Innova diesel

The global wave of eradicating fossil fuels for EVs is in full swing. Our states are beginning to take strict measures on diesel emission norms. The government is making it mandatory for all automakers to adopt technologies that can produce less-polluting engines. This has made the brands focus on petrol hybrids and EVs. Alternative fuel options are gradually pacing up due to the current scenarios. Therefore, there are high chances that Innova might ditch the 2.4-litre diesel in the Innova Crysta and continue with the Crysta petrol.

Toyota’s plans

Toyota has stopped taking bookings for the diesel Crysta. According to Toyota, the reason behind this is the high demand and increasing waiting periods. There are no official statements regarding the restart of the diesel bookings. As of now, the buyers who had already booked the diesel variants would get the cars. However, the company would continue to sell the 2.7-litre petrol engine in the Crysta. So, it’s still not yet confirmed whether Toyota would completely stop selling the diesel Crysta or if it just stopped for a period of time.

Taking into consideration all of this, we do expect the diesel variants to not be discontinued since this variant is very popular amongst private as well as commercial buyers. Moreover, with the new HyCross touted to be sold alongside the existing Innova, completely shunning diesel option could hurt the sales and Toyota would not want to do that.
