Hyundai is one manufacturer that has seen it all in the Indian market. When Hyundai entered the Indian automotive scene in 1998, it was almost an unknown brand in India. Before Hyundai, Maruti had a free run in the country. Hyundai brought in a few cars, one of them being the Santro. The Santro became a hit, laying the foundation for the Korean manufacturer in the country. However, after bringing in a few updates for the Santro, Hyundai decided to discontinue it to make way for a hatchback called the Eon. The Eon, however, could not replicate the Santro’s legacy and had to be discontinued as well after a while. Hyundai had one more product, the Accent which helped the Korean brand establish a strong name in the country since its initial days here. Hyundai Verna, as many may know, has its roots in the Accent. Now, Hyundai’s second innings for the Santro also failed and the car had to be discontinued again. This makes Verna the oldest mass-market car in Hyundai’s lineup which is soon going to get a major update. In today’s article, let’s talk about Hyundai’s oldest car and what are the updates that it will be coming with.

New dimensions & design

Hyundai Verna update

The new Verna is expected to be bigger than the current model. All the spy shots have pointed to beefed-up dimensions of the new Verna. This extra length could translate into more second-row space, a weakness of the current model. What about design? The new Verna could sport Hyundai’s latest ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language. The front fascia of the new Verna could be in-line with modern Hyundai cars. At the rear, we could see connected tail lamps like the new Venue.

Hyundai Verna update – Specifications

The new-generation Verna could see a powertrain revamp. Hyundai could continue with the 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel engines. However, there are chances that Hyundai might introduce the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine on the new Verna. Why do we think so? The 1.4-litre turbo-petrol will better stack against the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol of the Virtus and Salvia. According to rumours, Hyundai could also bring a mild-hybrid setup to the new Verna. This will be a major boon for mileage-conscious buyers.

Features

Hyundai Verna update

Features have always been Hyundai’s strong point in India. The current Verna is already a feature-loaded sedan but we expect Hyundai to bring in some more new features. A new touchscreen infotainment system, a heads-up display, multi-colour ambient lighting, electronic parking brake with auto hold and improved connected car technology could be some of the additions. Could Hyundai give it ADAS? It certainly can seeing the growing demand for ADAS.

Hyundai Verna update – Launch timeline

We have discussed other important details, but the most important question is: when is it coming? Currently, there is no official confirmation from Hyundai but it has been testing the new Verna in South Korea as well as in India. The brand is expected to unveil the car in South Korea by the end of this year. What about the India launch? In India, Hyundai could unveil the new Verna at the Auto Expo 2023. The launch could follow within two to three months after the Expo. The new Verna will go toe to toe with the Skoda Slavia, Volkswagen Virtus and the Honda City.
