MG is slowly and steadily building its reputation in India. The brand has done so with a well laid-out strategy and product lineup. MG has even dabbled in the EV space with the ZS EV. This year it gave the ZS EV a facelift to keep the car fresh. So does MG have plans for more EVs? It certainly has, considering EVs are the future. Like all manufacturers, MG is working on a sleeve of affordable EVs for our country. We have already talked about the E230, but today we are talking about a different car. This car is the brand’s latest performance EV which MG recently unveiled for the European market. In today’s article, we will be talking about this MG performance EV and whether it could come to India.

Dimensions & Design

MG EV

The MG4 is essentially MG’s electric hatchback. It is 4,287mm in length, 1,836mm in width & 1,506mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2,705mm. So, where does the MG4 slot in? It is bigger than the Nexon EV in terms of width & length, but smaller than EVs like the EV6 & ZS EV. What about the design? The MG4 gets a stylish front design with sharp headlamps and a sculpted bonnet. It gets a unique set of LED DRLS in the headlamp console. The side profile is clean, with no sharp lines and creases. At the rear, we have blacked-out tail lamps with a connecting strip in the middle. In the interiors, like all new EVs, it comes with a clean dashboard layout. It comes with a floating infotainment system with a similar placed digital instrument cluster and two-spoke steering wheel.

Specifications

MG EV

The MG-4 comes with not one, not two, but three motor options. It comes with a single-motor, rear-wheel drive and a dual-motor, four-wheel drive configuration. The single-motor variant comes in two specifications – a 167bhp power house & a 201bhp power house, while the dual-motor four-wheel drive produces 443bhp. What about the range figures? The 167bhp variant comes with a 51kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 350km. On the other hand, the 201bhp & 443bhp variants get a 64kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 450km.

So which one could come to India? The lower variant (167bhp & 350km range) is expected to be an affordable option for the market. This could help MG to price it below the ZS EV. But, what about the performance variant? MG could bring it as well since only a few carmakers are launching their performance EVs in the country, with the latest entrant being the Kia EV6. With MG4 being a performance electric hatchback, it could be priced well below cars like the EV6. This could make it quite a lucrative option in the market. For reference, the cheapest & only performance electric hatchback in India today is the Mini Cooper SE which comes in at Rs 50.90 lakh (ex-showroom) and produces 184bhp & 270Nm of torque which is quite low compared to MG4.

MG EV – Pricing & Launch

MG EV

As mentioned above, MG should look to price the MG4 aggressively in India. Currently, the price of the ZS EV is Rs 27.41 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai). Considering the MG4 is smaller and comes with lower specs in its lower variants, MG could price it somewhere around Rs 18 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai). Coming to the performance variant, even if MG manages to price it alongside the Mini Cooper SE, it would still be a great value-for-money option looking at the specifications. As far as launch is concerned, MG has not given any confirmation regarding this EV’s entry in India but we do expect that electric performance hatchback space is still quite vacant in the country and the launch of such vehicles could definitely help the brand and the industry in total.
