MG’s next car to take on Tata!
Electric vehicles are slowly gaining market share in India. Tata is leading this race with its electric vehicles like the Nexon EV and Tigor EV. MG is another manufacturer that is dabbling in the EV space with the ZS EV. But the ZS EV is on the expensive side of the spectrum. Due to this, Tata triumphs over MG in terms of sales. But MG plans to turn this around. So, what is MG’s plan? MG is working on an affordable EV for the Indian market. This car will be the E230, which will be a global product. E230 plan
The E230 is consistently being spotted testing in India for a few weeks. However, the one being tested in India is a left-hand drive car. For starters, the E230 will be based on the SAIC-GM-Wuling small electric global platform. It is believed that the E230 will take elements from the Wuling Hongguang Mini sold in China. The E230 is thus expected to be a two-door car-like Hongguang. Will such a car work in India? Will Indian buyers accept such a small car? Only time will tell. For comparison, dimension-wise, the Hongguang mini is smaller than Alto. With that being said, this EV could really become a great companion for city commuting, especially in crowded spaces.
MG’s next car – Other details
The E230 will be predominantly a city car. But what will be its range figures? According to rumours, it will get a 20kWh battery pack, giving it an estimated claimed range of 150km. As for pricing, MG should price it very aggressively to greatly enhance its VFM quotient. According to rumours, it is expected to be priced around the Rs 10 lakh mark. How will it compete with Tata?
So which Tata car will the MG E230 take on? As a product, it will have no competition, due to the market being still small for such products. But the main point is that it will be a more city-focused EV. In India, we do not get to see such a small car and that too, an EV. So, the E230 could put pressure on Tata’s EV lineup. But pricing will really be crucial for the brand since breaking the value-for-money code is important here.
