Further in his statement, Nitin Gadkari said that if any company is found negligent, a heavy fine will be imposed on the company. He also said that a recall of all defective vehicles will also be ordered. The minister has urged companies to take proactive action in that matter and not wait for something to happen before the defective vehicles are recalled.

The statement comes after a spate of electric two-wheeler fires in the past two months. Earlier this month, a video of an Ola scooter engulfed in flames went viral. A scooter from Pure EV was ablaze and a burning Okinawa killed two people. All the involved companies have started investigating the incidents internally. Recurring incidents have severely dented the reputation of electric scooters in India.

The government has been quite vocal about bringing EVs and alternate fuel cell vehicles in India. Currently, electric scooters and motorbikes make 2 percent of total sales of two-wheelers. The government wants to make it to 80 percent by 2030. To achieve this, the government is offering huge incentives to locally manufactured electric vehicles.
