Global NCAP has been creating awareness about safety amongst Indian car buyers through its #SaferCarsForIndia initiative. GNCAP recently tested the Hyundai i20 for safety, considering its popularity in the premium hatchback segment. With the test results out, it becomes important to compare i20’s safety ratings with other competition cars. In today’s article, this is exactly what we will do.

Hyundai i20 safety rating

The Hyundai i20 scored three stars in the recent Global NCAP safety tests. It scored 8.84 out of 17 in adult occupant protection. During the assessment, it showed an unstable structure and weak protection to the driver’s chest. In child safety, it scored 36.89 out of 49 despite using the ISOFIX anchorages to install, the three-year-old dummy showed high deceleration. This proves that the driver is not completely protected since his chest is prone to damage under the event of an accident. Even a child would have to face strong deceleration, making him vulnerable as well.

Tata Altroz

The Altroz is the safest hatchback in India, with a five-star adult occupant rating from GNCAP. It scored 16.13 out of 17 in adult occupant protection. During the assessment, its structure and footwell area was rated as stable. Head and neck protection was adequate. In child safety, it scored 29 out of 49. The Altroz lost points as the backrest of the seat was unlatched during the crash. Altroz is the safest car in the premium hatchback segment, making it the top choice amongst buyers looking for a safe hatchback. The Altroz gives a tough fight to the Hyundai i20 when it comes to safety.

Honda Jazz

The Honda Jazz scored four-star in the recent assessment by Global NCAP. It scored 13.89 out of 17 in adult occupant protection. During the assessment, it showed a stable structure. In child safety, it scored 31.54 out of 49. The Jazz does not have ISOFIX anchorages and for this reason, the CRS was tested using the adult seat belts.

Maruti Baleno & Toyota Glanza

The recently launched Maruti Baleno and Toyota Glanza are yet to be tested by GNCAP. So it is hard to predict its safety ratings even though Maruti has claimed that it has improved safety in the newer model.

The i20 is a great value-for-money package thanks to its long list of features and the availability of a wide variety of engine & gearbox options. The only thing that the Hyundai i20 needs to improve is its safety. By working on this, Hyundai will definitely be able to gain more number of buyers and will thus be able to give the competition an even tougher fight.
