The Indian Army is one of the most powerful armies in the world. So the vehicle it uses need to be tough and reliable. The Gypsy has been a mainstay in its lineup for two decades. As a product, Maruti discontinued Gypsys in 2018, but it has kept the production line to produce the Gypsys for the Army. The Army is now looking to replace the ageing Gypsy with a new car. It is looking to replace 35,000 Gypsys with a new 4×4 soft top vehicle. So in today’s article, we will see SUVs that can replace the Gypsy in the Indian Army.

The Army has been slowly phasing out the Gypsy with the Tata Safari Storme. In 2017, it signed a contract to supply over 3000 Safari Storme. This Tata Storme is a hardtop version that is quite different from the civilian version. It gets an upgraded drivetrain and heavily modified suspension.

Currently, Army is looking for a soft-top car to replace the Gypsy. A soft-top car enables soldiers to place rifles, guns and communication equipment by removing the soft top. Currently, the favourite to replace the Jimny is the soft-top Safari Storme as the Army already uses the hardtop one.

Other options

Another option the Army can consider is the soft top Mahindra Thar. But Mahindra will have to do some structural changes to match the demands of the Army. The Gurkha can be another option the Army can consider, but Force will have to do a lot of design changes to make it feasible.
