The brand unveiled the Meridian for the Indian market yesterday which will be coming in to take on the Fortuner. The Jeep Meridian is 4769mm in length, 1859mm in width & 1682mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2794mm and has a ground clearance of 214mm. In comparison, the Fortuner is 4795mm in length, 1855mm in width & 1835mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2745mm and has a ground clearance of 225mm.

The Meridian only comes with a diesel engine option. It comes with a 2.0-litre diesel engine like the Compass. Jeep has not revealed the power figures yet but we expect them to be similar to the Compass. The Compass’ diesel unit makes 170bhp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a nine-speed automatic with AWD option. 

The Fortuner comes with petrol and diesel engine options. The 2.7-litre petrol engine is capable of producing 163bhp and 245Nm of torque. On the other hand, the diesel engine is a 2.8-litre unit capable of producing 201bhp and 420Nm(MT)/ 500Nm(AT) of torque. It comes with 4WD option.

The Meridian comes loaded with features. It comes with features like a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, wireless charging, drive modes, a 360-degree camera, six airbags, a powered tailgate and a nine-speaker Alpine sound system.

 In comparison, the Fortuner comes with features like ventilated seats, wireless charging, an 11-speaker JBL system, connected car technology, driving modes, a cooled glovebox, dual-zone climate control and an 8.0-inch infotainment system.

Jeep has not yet revealed the pricing of the Meridian but we can expect an aggressive pricing. It is expected to start from Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom). In comparison, the Toyota Fortuner starts from Rs 31 lakh and goes to Rs 43 lakh (ex-showroom).

Which should you pick?

The Toyota Fortuner has been in the market for a very long time. Also, Toyota has over the years proved the mark of their reliability and service. So, if you want a tried & tested product that offers hassle-free ownership experience and will return good resale as well, you should go for the Fortuner. However, if you are someone that is looking for a unique product, wants premium interiors and a long list of modern features, you should wait for the Jeep Meridian’s pricing.
