The biggest reason behind this SUV trend has been the high ground clearance they offer and high seating position. Considering this growth, all manufacturers have shifted their focus on bringing new SUVs. But the top-three manufacturers in India – Maruti, Hyundai & Tata are especially focused on their SUV lineup. Maruti
Maruti continues to lead the Indian market. But its lead at the top has taken a hit mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, another reason for this has been its outdated product lineup. It currently only has one proper SUV in its lineup, the Brezza. Seeing the SUV trend, Maruti is working on some new SUVs. It is working on an all-new Vitara Brezza. It will get an updated design and a lot of new features. Maruti is also working on a mid-size SUV with Toyota. Another SUV Maruti can launch is the Jimny. The Jimny is a compact off-roader that can do well in India.
Upcoming SUVs – Hyundai
Hyundai’s recent success has been achieved due to its SUV lineup consisting of the Creta and Venue. Hyundai is bringing a sleeve of new SUVs and also updating some of its star performers. It is first going to launch the new-generation Tucson. The new Tucson has already started reaching dealerships in India, so we can expect a launch in the coming weeks. Hyundai is expected to launch the Kona facelift to rival the MG ZS EV. The Creta and Venue are also expected to get a facelift in the coming months. These facelifted models will help Hyundai retain its good sales in the SUV segment. But the biggest launch from Hyundai could be its premium electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5 which is due for a launch in 2022.
Tata
Tata has enjoyed great sales momentum in the last few years. This exponential growth has skyrocketed it to the number two position in the Indian market. A major chunk of this success has been brought by its SUV lineup. The next new SUV to come from Tata is expected to be the Nexon Coupe which has been in the rumours. A coupe-styled Nexon can revolutionise the segment. Another expected car from Tata is the Iconic Sierra in its EV avatar, displayed at the Auto Expo 2020. Other expected launches include the new-generation Nexon, Harrier facelift along with Harrier & Safari petrol variants.
