Buying a car is a tedious task. Sometimes buyers get overwhelmed by the entire process and end up making mistakes in their car buying process. As a car buyer, if you know the car buying process, you can easily avoid these mistakes. In this article, we will discuss five mistakes that people make while buying a new car and how you can avoid them.

Negotiating for the best deal

Many car buyers go to the nearest dealership, get a test drive and book the car without venturing into other options. Instead, you should visit at least three to four dealerships of the same brand. Get quotes from them, compare their quotes and use these quotes against the dealer to get a better quote or discount. Also, note the best time to buy a car is during the festive season and quarter-end or month-end. Salespeople at dealerships have monthly targets and they might give you offers and discounts just to meet their targets.

Not doing PDI (Pre-Delivery Inspection)

This is one of the most common mistakes that car buyers do. A PDI or Pre-Delivery Inspection is to be done where you thoroughly check the vehicle for any kind of manufacturing defect, any missing features or malfunction. The PDI needs to be done before the dealership takes the car to the RTO for registration. Sometimes dealers skip this step and hand over the car without a PDI certificate. A well-informed car buyer will always ask for a PDI certificate before taking delivery. This will avoid further complications and hassles that one might face in the future.

Extended warranty in advance

The next big mistake while buying a car is to end up buying an extended warranty. Carmakers usually offer a warranty period ranging from two years to four years. Dealerships usually pitch for an extended warranty clause just to add up to the final bill. Buying an extended warranty at the time of purchase can be skipped. You are spending money for the extra years of warranty that are already a few years in the future. You can definitely save some extra money by going with the standard warranty offered by the manufacturers.

Handling and transport charges

Dealerships are known for their dubious behaviors. Handling and transport charges are one of them. Some of the dealers add the handling and transport charges to the final bill of ignorant car buyers. If you find such charges in your bill, you can ask the dealership to remove these charges. In fact, the handling charges are considered to be illegal and the dealership could be fined for charging the same. If you find your dealer adding such charges to your final bill, call or email the customer support of the brand and inform them of such an incident. They will take necessary actions and see to it that you as a buyer are not charged for handling and transport charges.

Insurance

Another mistake that ignorant car buyers end up with is costly insurance. They usually rely on the insurance quote provided by the dealer. Instead, take multiple quotes from various insurance providers and compare for best quotes. Buying insurance from the dealer is not compulsory. Check for insurance cover that best suits your budget, needs and covers all possible damages that your car could face in the future.
