Road safety is a major issue all over the world. A lot of people lose their lives in road accidents. In India, we have one of the highest fatality rates from road accidents. Distractions are one of the biggest causes of accidents. One of the biggest distractors is smartphones. A lot of people use phones while driving, leading to severe accidents. To counter this, Australia has implemented a new system to penalise drivers. In todays article, we will see this mobile phone detection camera system.

What is this new technology?

Mobile phone detection cameras are the new technology that has been implemented in Australia. These cameras are made by a local company Acusensus. These cameras are mounted overhead, similar to speed traps. The camera comes with an infrared flash to penetrate the windscreen in any weather or speed. The system constantly takes photos of traffic passing by. Each image is then scanned by AI trained to detect mobile phones. The camera is positioned in such a way that it can detect a wide variety of phone use scenarios. If the AI detects an offence, the photo is sent for human review. If no mobile phone use is detected, the photo is deleted. The camera can typically capture over 60,000 12-megapixel images of vehicles each day.

If the camera system AI detects potential mobile use, the relevant images are sent to a human for review and undergo a proper review. If no offence is detected, the images are deleted and cannot be retrieved. If the offence is detected, then a fine is sent to the registered car.

Where is the system currently used?

A lot of jurisdictions in Australia have implemented or are planning to implement this system soon. Outside Australia, the Netherlands is the first country in the European Union to roll out similar technology. The UK has also adopted similar technology. New Zealand is also studying the feasibility of implementing this technology in the future.
