Mahindra Thar 5-door – could this be the plan?
The Thar has always been popular because of it’s rugged looks and off-road prowess. But the second generation has set the sales chart running with its design and features. Currently, the Thar has one of the highest waiting periods in the Indian market. But Mahindra is looking to continue its momentum with the 5-door Thar. It is working on this 5-door Thar. But it is expected to be very different from the earlier expectations. In today’s article, we will see what Mahindra is planning with the Thar 5-door.
Thar 5-door dimensions
The 3-door version of the Thar targets an audience who look for lifestyle or secondary vehicles. The 5-door Thar will be more inclined towards practicality and daily use vehicles. Mahindra will look to keep the Thar under 4 meters to save taxes. The 5-door version will get a similar wheelbase to the 3-door version. This will be done by Mahindra by reducing the bonnet length and increasing overhangs to make more space in the cabin. Mahindra already employs this design in its car-like the Bolero and Bolero Neo. These compact dimensions will give it better maneuverability in crowded spaces.
Specifications
Mechanically, the Thar 5-door will get the same engine and transmission options as the 3-door version. The Thar currently comes with 2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. It will borrow some suspension elements from the upcoming Scorpio to give it a more comfort-focused suspension setup.
Thar 5-door features
The 5-door will most likely carry all the features from the 3-door Thar like LED DRLs, smartphone connectivity via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, touchscreen infotainment etc. Mahindra might give it some more comfort features like connected car technology, wireless phone charging, 12v charging sockets and a reverse parking camera.
Launch timeline and pricing
The Thar is expected to be launched somewhere in 2023. As far as pricing goes, it is bound to increase with the extra space and features. We expect the Mahindra Thar 5-door to cost somewhere around Rs 1 lakh more than the existing Thar.
