Rs 10 lakh Thar – things you didn’t know
The Thar has been a great success for Mahindra. The lifestyle SUV received a generation change last year, and the new one has been selling quite well. The Thar, although a great product, is a bit on the expensive side. Also, the competition in this segment is expected to heat up with the upcoming Force Gurkha and Maruti Jimny. To counter this, Mahindra is looking to bring a cheaper variant of the Thar. In today’s article, we will discuss Rs 10 Lakh Mahindra Thar and look at the features & elements that the car could come with. These are our expectations from this car.
Lowered specifications
As this will be the cheaper variant, it is expected to come with a 1.5-litre diesel engine. The normal Thar comes with 2.0-litre mStallion petrol and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine with manual and automatic gearboxes. The 1.5-litre unit is expected to come with manual gearboxes only. Other than these, the car is expected to sit on smaller 16-inch steel wheels rather than 18-inch alloys. We think Mahindra might offer the car with MTT like we see in the Bolero Neo. While not having 4WD on the Thar will be a big miss, the suspension, dimensions and other specifications will be carried forward. It would be great if Mahindra could continue to give the 2.2-litre engine like they did with the AX variant.
2WD with MTT
With the price being lowered, the company might have to take some steps to reduce the cost. The biggest change might be the unavailability of the 4WD option with this cheaper Thar. Rather, Mahindra might offer a rear-wheel-drive drivetrain, coupled with Mahindra’s MTT (Multi-Terrain Technology). MTT works like a semi-4X4, helping the vehicle conquer different types of terrain. Mahindra introduced this technology with the newly launched Bolero Neo. This car will prove great for people who are going to tackle tough terrain, but not technical stuff that will require 4WD.
Fewer features
As mentioned above, Mahindra will need to take multiple cost-cutting measures to make this work. So Mahindra might remove a lot of comfort features. Second-row seating could be made optional with only the front row available as standard. This cheaper Thar might come with a 2-DIN infotainment unit, manual windows, reverse parking sensors and a hardtop. Features like cruise control, LED DRLs, speakers, TPMS and steering-mounted controls are expected to be missing.
Pricing
The car might start somewhere around Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). There is no official confirmation regarding the launch yet, but with the incoming competition, we expect Mahindra to come with this cheaper Thar sooner than expected.
