Tata Motors has created a big stir in the market with their announcement regarding manufacturing seven new EVs. Tata Motors and TPG Rise Climate have entered into an agreement wherein they will be investing Rs 7,500 crore in a newly formed subsidiary of Tata Motors that will be manufacturing electric vehicles. One such EV from Tata Motors that we are eagerly awaiting is the iconic Tata Sierra. We are expecting the Tata Sierra to be brought back as an electric off-roader for the country. In this article, we will be discussing the Tata Sierra EV and what it could offer in the future.

Design

Tata Sierra

The Tata Sierra was on display at the Auto Expo 2020 and it was one car that everyone was eager to see in the production version. We do expect Tata to retain some elements from the concept. The three-door design and the curved glass window for the second row will help Tata Motors to retain the iconic design of the Sierra. The car will get the new ‘Impact 3.0’ design language. The front fascia of the Sierra will resemble that of Harrier and Safari to bring in uniformity in the Tata SUV design language.

Specifications

The new car will be built on the Omega-Arc platform, the same platform that currently underpins the Harrier and Safari. The powertrain is expected to be bigger than what we see on the Nexon EV. It is expected to have a 40kWh or more lithium-ion battery pack and a more powerful motor, capable of producing around 150-200bhp with a range of 400km plus on a single charge.

All-Wheel Drive

The Sierra is also expected to come with an all-wheel-drive option. This will make Sierra the first electric car that is capable of going off-road. There are some really high-performance EVs available in international markets that are good at off-roading like the Hummer EV, the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian EV truck. People aspiring to buy such cars could definitely wait and go for Sierra EV. Currently, there is no such car in the Indian electric car market that comes with an all-wheel-drive system. Getting Sierra with an all-wheel drive will set a new benchmark for other car makers who are trying to enter the SUV EV segment in the country.

Tata Sierra EV Pricing

Looking at the dimensions of the Sierra that was on display at the Auto Expo 2020, the car is expected to fall under four metres. Tata Motors will place this above the Nexon EV. We expect Tata to price the Sierra between Rs 20 to Rs 25 Lakh. It will compete with MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona when it comes to the pricing of the vehicle.
