A police constable from Chennai has busted a big racket of sale of illegal Royal Enfield bikes in Chennai. The head constable single-handedly worked on this case where his friend’s Royal Enfield was stolen on 6th August. 26 Royal Enfield bikes have been retrieved as of now and busted a three-year-old bike theft racket operational in different parts of TamilNadu.

Smart Head Constable

The constable who solved this case, Shravankumar led to the arrest of 10 people. He also received praise from his seniors for his wit and was also offered a cash reward. Shravankumar got on the case as after his friend’s Royal Enfield bullet got stolen and the report was registered in the Abhirampuram station. He also later received 2 same complaints where the RE bikes were stolen.

Shravankumar compiled similar such complaints from other police stations. All in all 24 Police stations had similar reports of missing Royal Endfield bikes. The constable’s wit was here that he narrowed his search by just one thought. Royal Endfield bikes are slow and they can not be used to carry out thefts like chain snatching or as escape vehicles. This meant that those bikes were being sold at a lower rate.

Investigation Dead-ends

The investigation hit a dead-end many times as there weren’t CCTV cameras in the areas where the thefts were taking place. The gang of thieves was careful to exploit the CCTV blind spots so that it becomes difficult for the cops.

So instead of using CCTV, the cop decided to track these vehicles all the times. The investigation was causing a wild goose chase and surveillance being set-up for 56 days. All this finally resulted in the thieves walking into a bait.

Caught in the Act

Head constable

The accused had taken Shravankumar’s friend’s bike to Shenoy Nagar. The accused entered the blind spot and this was and the area where there were a lot of history sheeters. After 2 days the bike was moved as the thieves thought that the bike had lost heat on it. The investigating officer had kept a close eye on their moment.

“We caught three accused this way 10 days ago and they admitted to committing the crimes. Based on the details they gave, we have arrested another four persons. We are confident that we will retrieve all the bikes and arrest everyone involved, The accused were selling the bikes that originally cost upto Rs 2.5 lakh for Rs 30,000 and Rs 40,000. They had a Whatsapp group to coordinate the sales,”

Lastly the bike thieves were caught as the cops started to track their phone numbers. All this lead to the recovery of 26 Royal Enfield bikes.

How to protect your bike?

Recovered bikes

Make sure that your bike is parked in a visible area. If possible keep it parked inside a gated area with its own security. Keep the bike covered to keep it away from unwanted attention. A thief is going to target easy targets. If you have dealt directly in a second-hand bike then try to get the locks changed. Lastly, it might sound lame but chain your bike wheel of chassis. This will increase some amount of work while you use your bike but at least it will keep it safe if you live in an area prone to such thefts.
