KTM RC 490 – Arriving in a New Style?
India is a growing market, not just in terms of sales but also in terms of displacement and performance. Many manufacturers have rolled up their sleeves to manufacture the mid – displacement bikes. KTM is certainly the manufacturer, who has bikes ranging from 125 cc to 790 cc. However, there’s lots of void space between the 790 cc and 390 cc in KTMs lineup. So to fill up the gap KTM will be bringing the RC 490 as well as the 490 Duke. Let’s see what these bikes will offer in the Indian market.
Design
Designwise, the 490 series is expected to share the body design from the 390 series. However, to make it appear premium motorcycle, there might be few tweaks in the design. The trellis frame chassis is supposed to get tweaked to accommodate the bigger engine. As well as the colour and graphics options will be premium over the 390. Overall, the design language is expected to remain the same as the 390 series.
Engine
The most interesting thing the RC 490 and as well as 490 Duke will get, is the engine. The bikes will be getting a 490 cc parallel-twin, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, 8-valve DOHC unit.

The engine will be producing somewhere between 55-60 bhp max power. The redline of this engine is expected after the 12-13,000 rpm which will be a massive improvement. The engine will be mated with a 6-speed gearbox and slipper clutch. And, yes it will have bi-directional quick shifters as well. So the RC 490 is supposed to be more track-focused than the RC 390.
The 490 series is expected to share lots of parts with the KTM 390s. It is expected to share the same suspension setup as of the 390. Nevertheless, the brakes are likely to be better, we are expecting it with twin disc at the front wheel. The instrument cluster is expected to be the same unit as of the KTM 390 Duke for both RC 490 and 490 Duke.
It is a coloured TFT display digital unit with Bluetooth connectivity. The KTM RC 490, as well as 490 Duke, are supposed to get various riding modes such as sports, city, track, etc.
Price
The reason why we are expecting that it will share parts with the 390 series is that it will help the manufacturer to keep the cost low. Currently, there are very few contestants in the segment so it will surely help the manufacturer to gather the initial sales very easily. The bikes are supposed to be priced around Rs 3.2-3.7 lakhs (ex-showroom). The bikes will be competing against upcoming Honda CBR500R and Ninja 400.
Other 490 bikes
Along with the Duke and RC, the brand is planning to plant the same engine on the Adventure, SMR R and Enduro R motorcycles. Among the three, 490 Adventure might get launched in India but the remaining series are more likely to be limited for the international markets.
