The move toward EVs is slowly gaining momentum in India. As with any new technology, electric cars are quite expensive due to the battery costs. Tata is one manufacturer that has launched affordable options in the form of Tigor EV and Nexon EV. Manufacturers like Maruti and Hyundai are still a few years away from bringing affordable electric cars, considering the slow (positive) growth. In such a situation, who would have thought a new-entrant like Citroen could be planning to bring an affordable EV next year? Certainly not us, but Citroen has confirmed that it will be indeed bringing its affordable electric vehicle for India next year. In today’s article, we find out all the details about this Nexon EV competition.

When is the C3 coming?

Before we dive into Citroen’s affordable EV, we need to understand Citroen’s next product, the C3. The C3 will be Citroen’s mass-market car that will cater to a wide group of buyers. As a product, the C3 will target micro-SUV and premium hatchback segments. Citroen has done heavy localisation on the C3 to keep the costs down. So what would be the ideal pricing of the C3? It could start from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom) which could be a fair price for the C3.

Affordable EV

Carlos Tavares, CEO of the Stellantis group confirmed that Citroen will be launching an affordable electric car by next year. He also confirmed that this car will be based on the C3’s platform. So we expect this affordable car to be an electric version of the C3. Why do we think so? As it will save the brand a lot of time & resources in developing a completely new car.

Citroen’s first EV in India will be quite affordable. How is Citroen going to make this happen? According to Citroen, the car will be localised to keep costs down. It will have over 90% localisation with only the battery pack set to be imported. Citroen will also be trying to source batteries locally if possible in the future. So what could be the ideal pricing for this affordable EV? We expect Citroen to price it somewhere in the range of Rs 9 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, if it wants to make a successful mark in the market.
