There are hardly any car makers who can hold a candle to Mercedes-Benz when it comes to luxury.

While it is regarded for its acclaimed luxury sedans, there is another marvel that comes from the same stable, combining the luxury of an S-class sedan, the styling of a coupe and performance of a sports car, called the Mercedes AMG S 63 Coupe. We could hardly wait to experience this magnificent beast.

Mercedes AMG S 63 Coupe Design

The S63 Coupe is based on the S-Class sedan, however it distinguishes itself quite well as a Coupe, while carrying the AMG badge. A large AMG twin louvre grille incorporates the three pointed star in the centre. The LED headlamps have Swarovski crystals. It has a long bonnet with a sloping roof, extending upto the short boot with an integrated little spoiler. The rear bumper has two pairs of exhaust pipes and the car runs on 19-inch alloy wheels. Though the coupe is close to the size of the four-door S-Class sedan, it looks smaller but meaner.

Step inside and you will quickly realize that it is indeed one of the best cars in the world. The suave dashboard layout, black and tan coloured nappa leather upholstery with carbon fibre inserts, the sculpted three-spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom, all exude a sense of brilliance and class. The switchgears are the best you can ever find. I fell in love with the seats, which are by far one of the best encountered. The S63 AMG Coupe pampers you with all the luxurious features the S-Class is known for. The mood lighting in the cabin has seven colours to choose from. The seats have fans within, to keep you free from any perspiration and to spoil you further, it also has various massage modes including hot stone massage, for the driver and co-passenger. A Burmester 3D surround sound audio system offers a top-class music experience.

There are two screens that show up the instrument cluster and the navigation and other controls. The COMAND system is intuitive and it takes little time to get acquainted with the interface which has multiple functions and personalization options. The touch pad recognizes gestures. There is a heads up display that shows the speed without you needing to take your eyes off the road and also shows directions. The car senses obstacles on the road with help of 360 degree cameras and acts accordingly, be it a pedestrian, a pothole or a collision, where it automatically brakes, adjusts the suspension and the seat belt pre-tensioners come into play.

Rear seat comfort is not a forte of this car, though whatever comfort it gives, is better than many sedans. There is enough legroom and accessing the rear seat is also not cumbersome as the front seats slide automatically to allow easy access. The S63 Coupe offers decent boot space as well of 400 litres.

Mercedes AMG S 63 Coupe Engine

The AMG S 63 Coupe boasts a 5.5-litre, twin turbocharged V8 under the hood that delivers a mammoth 585bhp and an enormous torque of 900Nm, mated to the 7-speed Speedshift automatic transmission. The engine has a refined rumble on starting and roars when the throttle is pushed. Hit the highway and floor the pedal, within seconds you realize that you are on the other side of 150 km/h and its just the beginning. The car has loads of reserve power to propel it further. The top speed is electronically controlled at 250 km/h. Kick in the adaptive cruise control and all you need to do is relax behind the wheel, while the car does the rest.

While the seats wrap around you snugly, the backrest’s side supports automatically retract inwards during cornering to keep you planted firmly. Ride quality is such that it leaves little to be desired, being calm and keeping you isolated from the undulations on the road.

The cabin is extremely silent.
