A bizarre accident involving a Mercedes-Benz C-class and a motorcycle resulted in the death of 2 persons, in Mumbai, yesterday. The incident took place during the wee hours on Saturday, 24th March on the Palm Beach road in Navi Mumbai.

This accident is another reminder about road safety and how one must adhere to it. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, who also was the owner of the car, was not wearing his seatbelt. The car was at a speed in excess of 150 km/h when it rammed into a motorcycle.

The impact of the speeding Mercedes was such that it broke the railing on the side of the road.

Rahul Patil, aged 36, was driving his Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan towards CBD Belapur.

Near NRI Complex, he rammed into Ruben Pillai aged 25, who was on his way home from work.

As per the police, the car was over-speeding and the bike was in the third lane. The driver swerved to the left to avoid colliding with the bike, but in turn lost control and rammed into the bike and the side railing. A case of rash driving has been registered by the police.

The driver was thrown out of the car and had his face smashed, killing him on the spot, as the car turned turtle several times. Patil, a businessman used to often go on long drives at odd hours when the traffic is relatively less. He is survived by his wife and a six-year old daughter and a two-year old son.

A lesson to be learnt from this incident is that however safe the car is, if you do not wear seat belts, you are at great risk. There was a possibility of the driver surviving the crash, had he been wearing the seat belt.

Also, high speed driving within city limits is another negligence and must be avoided.

We urge all our readers to wear seat belts whenever they are in a vehicle, either driving or even while being seated. Seat belts are known to save lives. Also one must adhere to rules and keep away from rash and negligent driving.
