Fiat Punto has failed in crash test norms of today. Back in 2005, when Fiat had launched the Punto, it got 5 star rating, but it seems with the improvement in various aspects of safety, the Punto has been left behind.

The Punto is at the moment sold in many markets that includes India. In 2005, this was safe but today it is no longer as per European standards. In fact it has scored a 0 rating.

This shouldn’t be a surprise as the EuroNCAP ratings have seen a change with time in the criteria to clear the test. For instance, the Suzuki Swift launched in 2010 got 5 star rating and the new-gen Swift scored 3 star without the safety pack. With the safety pack, it did get 4 points. The new crash test norms will be coming into India soon. The launch of this should be in 2019. This will mean many of the vehicles that aren’t safe, will be out of production around that tenure.

Maruti seems to one of the players that is the most prepared one. The company has already called the Vitara Brezza, Ignis and the DZire that will clear the next set of crash test norms. Other automakers are working on the same. Most of the Fiat enthusiasts bought a Punto or Linea with safety as one of its criteria, but now that also isn’t the case anymore. The Fiat enthusiasts will not have any new products as a replacement anytime soon.

Now, FCA is focusing on the Jeep brand.

Fiat has taken a back step. We aren’t certain of what are the company’s plans for the Indian car market for the Fiat brand. As a Punto/Linea owner what are your thoughts?
