Tata Motors has snatched the no. 4 position in terms of passenger vehicle sales in India, last month. Tata has overtaken Honda Cars India to reach this position. This is a big feat for the company which was struggling with falling sales a couple of years back. This achievement is thanks to the new product launched by Tata lately, which included the Tiago, Tigor, Hexa and the newly launched Nexon.

The Tiago accounts for more the 40% of  sales for Tata Motors, since the time it was launched. In September, the Tata Nexon and Tiago both have sold around 10000 units last month, catapulting the company to no.4. The top three car sellers are Maruti, Hyundai and Mahindra.

Tata beat Honda Cars in terms of sales, which is commendable. Tata Motors sold 19,334 units in September 2017, with a growth rate of 18.24 per cent, as compared to the same month last year. Honda sold 18,257 units in the same month, growing at a rate of 21.93 per cent.

In the first few months of the fiscal year 2018, it was Honda which was selling higher, but Tata has not overtaken it. Honda also has been growing consistently and this growth has been fueled by new product launches. The Honda City and WR-V have been the major growth drivers. Intact, the WR-V has been selling higher than even the City. These vehicles are the best sellers in their respective segments.

However, in the compact SUV space, the Tata Nexon has taken the market by storm, mainly due to its extremely aggressive price tag. The Tata Nexon offers fantastic value for money and comes across as a competitive vehicle, which is feature loaded as well. The affordability it comes with has made the competition re-think its strategy.

Tata Motors is working on a host of new generation vehicles which will be launched over the next year or two. This includes the new Q502 (codename) SUV and the X451(codename) premium hatchback. Tata would want to repeat the success of the Tiago and Nexon, hence it will leave no stone unturned to try and achieve this.

The rivalry between Honda and Tata will remain to be exciting as both manufacturers are getting new products into the market. While Honda has cemented its place as a reliable brand, Tata is doing its bit to improve its brand perception in this space. The new products are proving to be much better than earlier ones and this is surely helping the company in its rejig.
