You will be fined

Car LED headlamps

The transport department of Gujarat has reportedly issued a directive stating that the after-market installation of LED headlights in any vehicle is now strictly prohibited. According to this notification, vehicles caught with aftermarket LED headlamps will be fined. The Ahmedabad RTO has started a campaign to make people aware of this new regulation and also the ill effects of such lights.

What is the fuss?

According to the circular, extra strong LED lights can pose a danger to oncoming traffic. These strong LED lights may blind the oncoming traffic causing fatigue and accidents. Generally, OEMs try to adjust their lights to avoid this, but the same can’t be said about aftermarket options. The directive has instructed all the RTOs under the jurisdiction to conduct enforcement drives and submit the report. Also, not only the vehicle owners will be penalised, but auto accessory shops selling and installing such unauthorised white lights will also be penalised.

This is not the first time such a directive has been passed against such LED lights. In 2018, Kerala police were given Lux metres to take action on vehicles with LED lights above a certain luminosity. Violators were required to change the bulbs and pay the fine. Similar things were also done by the transport authorities of Chennai and Bangalore.
