Car Sales – Honda City

Car Sales - Honda City

Let’s start with the car which is currently the longest running car in India, the Honda City. It was first launched in 1998 and currently it is in 5th generation avatar. Ever since launched it has been one of the favourite choices, thanks to Honda’s V-tech petrol engine. Even today, the City offers premium cabin experience and sophisticated ride quality. However, the premium appeal simply lacks behind the competitors like Hyundai Verna or the VW Virtus, affecting the sales. In March 2024, Honda managed to sell only 1,116 units of the City which is far behind its prime competitors.

Kia Carens

Kia Carens

One of the most luxurious and affordable 7-seaters in the current market is undoubtedly the Kia Carens. It is a feature loaded MPV which offers features like 10.25-inch touchscreen system, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, LED headlights, folding table in second row, Bose sound system, and a spacious cabin space. Also, it comes with one of the refined 1.5-litre turbo petrol engines which produces best in segment – 157bhp & 253Nm of torque. However, Kia sold only 4,737 units of the Carens in March 2024. Now it is not a small number either, but its competitor, the Maruti Ertiga, which has less equipment to offer, clocked 14,888 sales in the same month.

Car Sales – Skoda Kodiaq

Car Sales - Skoda Kodiaq

Another such car or rather SUV which offers a premium package against the competition at much lower price is the Skoda Kodiaq. And yes, you guessed it right, the competitor is the overly priced Toyota Fortuner. We do know the power the Toyota brand and the Fortuner nameplate holds in India. However, the Kodiaq is simply more upmarket and premium than the Fortuner. The Kodiaq gets a premium cabin with soft touch materials all over, with Skoda’s simply clever features. Even the ride quality is far superior than the Fortuner as the Kodaiaq gets Skoda’s dynamic chassis. So even after offering so much and more, Skoda was able to sell only 136 units of Kodiaq in March 2024.

Citroen C3

Citroen-C3

Now this could be a surprising addition in the list of good cars as the Citroen has received a lot of criticism since its launch in India. That said, the C3 hatchback actually packs a better package. It might be lacking in terms of features but it is not an overkill by any means. What goes in its favour straightaway is the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine. In fact it is the only car in this segment or only car under Rs 10 lakh which offers a turbo engine. Also, the recent crash test result did not go in its favour which, according to Citroen, will be different once it offers 6-Airbags and other safety features. In March 2024, only 265 units of Citroen C3 were sold.

Car Sales – Maruti Jimny

Car Sales - Maruti Jimny

Lastly, we have the Maruti Jimny, with a disappointing sales of 318 units in March 2024. The Jimny was supposed to carry the legacy of the Maruti Gypsy but the SUV just cannot beat the popular Mahindra Thar. We should admit that the Jimny is actually a pretty sorted product with excellent off-road capabilities, for which it has been built for. It comes with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which is powerful enough to drive the light weighted Jimny. Not just the engine but the Jimny even shines in terms of practicality as it has usable rear seats. What it misses out on is the dimensions and design. It is a handsome looking SUV but the Mahindra Thar is just humongous in front of Jimny and hence offers better road presence.
