Since then, Mercedes has brought all the updates of the E-Class to India. This year it is expected to launch the 6th gen model, which it unveiled last year. After the E-Class, Mercedes has gone to launch all of its cars in India from EVs to performance variants. 

Honda City – 1998

India’s most loved sedan was launched in 1998 and since then it has gone from strength to strength. Funnily enough, the Honda City started as a hatchback, but these models never came to India. Its third generation was a sedan, which was launched in India. The City went on to become a synonym for reliability and mileage. In recent years it has faced a downward trend due to the emergence of SUVs, still, the City nameplate has made its name in the league of its own.

One of India’s best-selling cars, the WagonR was launched in 1999. Over the years, it has received several updates with the latest being in 2022. Initially, the WagonR shared its platform with the Japanese WagonR, but later it was made completely different from the Japanese model. In 2023, the WagonR breached the 30 lakh sales milestone. Going forward, Maruti is expected to bring an electric version of the WagonR continuing the popular nameplate.

Maruti Alto – 2000

The Alto started as a replacement for the Maruti 800 but has since then gone on to make its legacy. In just 6 years, Alto became the best-selling model in India and it has kept the crown ever since. In 2023, the Alto became the first car to clock 45 lakh sales in India showing just how popular it is. Though the Alto will motor along for the foreseeable future, with the market shifting to SUVs and with upcoming car regulations the Alto could face its demise.

The 5th car on the list is Mahidra’s workhorse the Bolero, which was launched in 2000. Over its 23 years of existence, the Bolero has received updates, new engines and features, but its overall design has remained more or less similar. Not only it has served the passenger segment, but it’s pickup and commercial options have also been highly successful. Mahindra is gearing up to give a major update to the Bolero in the next few years further driving up its legacy.
