Cars and cricket are the two most talked about things in India, and when they combine they are bound to get the maximum traction. In recent years, IPL has become huge, and Tata has rightly cashed on it by becoming its title sponsor. Over the years, several Tata cars have been displayed at IPL stadiums. So, just before the start of the 2024 IPL, we thought it would be a good idea to see all the Tata cars featured in the IPL.

Tata Nexon – 2018

The Nexon was the first Tata car to become the official partner of IPL. It was the first time Tata Motors was directly partnering with the IPL. This was the launch model of the Nexon newly launched in the compact SUV segment, competing with the Maruti Brezza. Along with displaying the car at stadiums, Tata also had the super striker award for all matches. Sunil Narine had won the Nexon for being the super striker of the tournament. There was also a Nexon fan catch award which is where any fan who takes a one-handed catch in the stands, has a chance to win INR 1 lakh and the season winner gets a Nexon.

Tata cars in IPL – Harrier – 2019

Tata had signed a three-year deal with IPL, and that is why it showcased the newly launched Harrier. Tata also continued the Super Striker award and Fan Catch award for the 2019 edition. The Harrier did also face the brunt of a Chris Lynn six that hit it on the windshield, but surprisingly the glass remained unscathed, a very good ad for Tata Motors. Additionally, the Super Striker award for that season went to another West Indian, Andre Russell.

Tata Altroz – 2020

The Altroz became the third Tata car to be showcased in an IPL as it was launched earlier that year. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 season was played in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Tata exported the Altroz to these locations. Like previous years, the player with the best strike rate in a match will win the Altroz Super Striker Trophy along with prize money of Rs 1 lakh, while the one with the highest strike rate during the tournament will drive home the Altroz. For 2020, the Super Striker trophy was won by Kieron Pollard playing for Mumbai Indians.

The 2021 was a weird season as it was played in two parts. The first half was played in India but was mid-way affected by COVID which led to its suspension. Then it was resumed in September but was shifted to Dubai. In the first half, the Tata Safari was the official partner, while in the second half, the Safari Gold edition was the face of Tata. Tata launched a new initiative, wherein every time a batsman hits a six and the ball lands on either the car or the car display podium or the Safari #Gold LED commercial board, Tata Motors would contribute an amount of Rs 2 lakhs to The Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO that worked towards Covid – 19 relief throughout India.

Tata Punch Kaziranga – 2022

In 2022, Tata became the official sponsor of IPL, proudly showcasing its name as the Tata IPL. For the 2022 season, Tata chose the Punch to be its display car. Then mid-season, Tata launched a one-off Punch Kaziranga edition, which was auctioned with a starting bid of Rs 9.49 lakh with the proceeds from the auction going to wildlife conservation efforts at Kaziranga National Park, Assam. The car was won by Pune resident, Ameen Khan, with a key handover ceremony in Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

The first EV Tata car to be displayed at the IPL was the Tiago.ev. Like other seasons, Tata continued with the Super Striker award with a chance to drive home a brand new Tata Tiago.ev at the end of the tournament. Additionally, each time the ball hits the Tiago.ev car on display, Tata Motors will donate INR 5,00,000 towards enhancing the biodiversity of Coffee Plantations in Karnataka by planting saplings. During the season, the Tiago.ev was hit two times once by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Nehal Wadhera. So Tata donated a total of Rs 10 lakh.

The Tata Punch.ev is the face of IPL in 2024 being the brand’s newest launch. It has already featured in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where one of its rear window glass was broken by an Ellyse Perry six. Tata then gifted the broken glass memorabilia to Ellyse Perry and also donated Rs 5,00,000 towards the installation of solar panels at TATA Memorial Hospital, Kolkata in collaboration with Tata Power. This would also be done in IPL if the Punch.ev is hit by a ball.
