The last few years have seen exponential growth in the SUV segment. In all this hoorah, manufacturers have completely bent the definition of SUVs. Most such SUVs lack proper off-roading capability. But some proper off-roaders are coming in the upcoming days. Let’s talk about such upcoming hardcore off-roaders.

Mahindra Thar 5-door

Upcoming off-roaders

One of the most anticipated cars in this segment is the Thar 5-door. Mahindra is going to launch the Thar 5-door sometime in 2024. From the spy images, the Thar 5-door is expected to get some subtle but noticeable changes compared to the 3-door model. We could see a new grille, circular LED DRLs, new alloy wheels and new bumpers. In the interiors, we expect more changes like a bigger touchscreen, sunroof, new centre armrest, sunroof, cup holders etc. Under the hood, we could see the 2.0-litre turbo petrol (200bhp/370Nm) and 2.2-litre diesel engine (172bhp/370Nm). It should come with manual and automatic gearbox options. What about the price? The Thar 5-door could start from Rs 18 lakh and go to Rs 24 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Tata Sierra

Upcoming off-roaders

The legendary Sierra nameplate is going to make a comeback in the future. Tata showcased the concept at the Auto Expo of 2023. It is expected to come with EV and ICE powertrains. The EV is going to be based on the skateboard Acti.EV platform, while the platform for the ICE version remains a mystery. The EV variant is confirmed to get 4×4 capabilities, but again, we can’t say the same thing for the ICE variant. Tata is expected to retain most of the concept elements in the production model. In the interiors, the Sierra is expected to offer roomy and spacious interiors. Sierra EV is expected to be launched sometime in 2025 and the ICE version could be launched after that only.

Upcoming off-roaders – Force Gurkha 5-door

Upcoming off-roaders

Force is also working on increasing the dimensions of the Gurkha. The Gurkha 5-door has been spotted testing several times. Unlike the Thar 5-door, there seem to be no notable changes on the 5-door compared to the 3-door model. The test mule has been spotted with things like a rear-mounted spare wheel, snorkel, high wheel arches and halogen headlamps. Under the hood, the Gurkha is expected to continue with the 2.6-litre Mercedes-sourced diesel engine capable of producing 91bhp and 250Nm of torque. The 5-speed manual should continue, Force should also look to give it an automatic gearbox. Force is expected to launch the Gurkha 5-door sometime this year.
