SUVs are all the rage in India with everyone looking to buy one. This is why manufacturers are ditching their hatchbacks and sedans in favour of SUVs. However, BYD seems to be trying something new as it has trademarked the Dolphin hatchback in India. The specs of Dolphin pit it directly against the Nexon EV. So, let’s talk about the BYD Dolphin.

Trademarked

BYD is gearing up to launch its third car, the Seal in India. The brand has confirmed that it plans to launch the electric sedan on 5th March. Ahead of that launch, BYD has also trademarked the Dolphin hatchback in India. BYD is yet to confirm its plans regarding the Dolphin in India, but trademarking it is a step in the right direction. Now, let’s talk about the BYD Dolphin a bit.

BYD Dolphin – Design

BYD Dolphin

The Dolphin comes with quite a traditional design. It doesn’t even look like an EV from the outside. At the front, we have small LED headlamps with a closed-off grille. We also have an ADAS radar on the air dam. In the side profile, the car has lots of cuts and creases. At the rear, it takes heavy inspiration from the Atto-3 with a similar-looking connected tail lamp setup. The Dolphin comes with 17-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels.

Specifications

BYD Dolphin

The BYD Dolphin comes with the company’s Blade battery technology. Globally, it comes with two battery options – 44.9kWh and 60.4kWh. The brand claims a combined range of 315km and 427km. Powering the Dolphin is a 201bhp motor in the higher variants. Lower variants come with a 93bhp or 174bhp motor. Top speed is limited to 160kmph on all variants, barring the base which has a top speed of 150kmph. All-disc brakes are present on all the variants.

BYD Dolphin – Interior & features

BYD Dolphin

The interiors of the Dolphin do look quite good for a car in this range. We have a grey and blue colour upholstery, giving the hatchback a unique look. Then we also have a three-spoke steering wheel with a small pop-up digital instrument cluster. The circular AC vent looks quite good on the dashboard design. Feature-wise, the Dolphin comes with things like a heated driver seat, electrically adjustable seats, a 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen, wireless charging, 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera, and ADAS. The Dolphin comes with a vehicle-to-load function like the Nexon EV.
