Maruti Fronx Hybrid: What do we know?

Fronx front end design

Reports suggest that the new model will be launched in India before the end of 2025, when the Fronx facelift is also expected to be introduced. While the larger Grand Vitara utilises the Toyota sourced hybrid unit, the Fronx is expected to come with a new range extender hybrid system developed completely in-house by the brand for its budget models.

Fundamentally, the Maruti hybrid system will utilise the 1.2-litre Z-series engine from the 2024 Swift as a generator to charge the 2kWh battery pack which will drive the motor. This system reduces the complexities associated with hybrid systems by eliminating the direct mechanical link between the engine and the wheels. Additionally, as the engine does not directly take the driving load, the mechanical losses are contained to a minimum helping in exceptional mileage of up to 35 kmpl in city stop & go traffic.

Why Hybrids?

Maruti Suzuki has seen great response to its hybrid SUV, the Grand Vitara. The hybrid variants account to 20 percent of the SUVs total sales in 2023. Now Maruti believes this cheaper to product series hybrid powertrain will counter the high costs of EVs and other hybrid engines, making it a viable and eco-friendly option for the future. Besides, this new technology will also help the company meet the stringent CAFÉ targets that are set to be introduced in 2027.

According to industry reports, the brand has planned to launch 5 new hybrid cars in the market starting with the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara 7-seater and Maruti Suzuki Fronx facelift in 2025. These models will be followed by the Next-gen Baleno and the Spacia based budget MPV in 2026. The last model to get this hybrid unit will be the Maruti Suzuki Swift Facelift in 2027.

While Maruti is late to the EV party, the hybrid races looks to be its to win. What do you think of the company’s plans for the future?
