The Indian car market is maturing in terms of car-buying decisions. Once mileage was the only consideration for most people, but now that is changing. Other aspects like car safety are also being given importance. The awareness brought about by Indian brands and European brands is working to some extent. Currently, manufacturers in India have to rely on GNCAP for safety scores. However, that is going to change as Bharat NCAP has been implemented by the government. It will come into effect from 1st October 2023. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Bharat NCAP launch.

Which cars will be tested?

Bharat NCAP

The ratings will be enforced upon cars and SUVs weighing under 3.5 tonnes and with a seating capacity of 8 will be crash-tested here. The car should be either manufactured or imported into the country. Also, BNCAP will cover CNG and EV cars in its testing, which is not done by GNCAP.

Working of Bharat NCAP

  • First-up manufacturers nominate a vehicle model.
  • Then BNCAP will select the base model of that car from the manufacturing facility of the manufacturer.
  • Then the marked car will be sent to the BNCAP test facility by the manufacturer.
  • Then the crash test will be conducted in the presence of the representatives of the manufacturer and BNCAP officials.
  • After that test data will be compiled and sent to the manufacturer.
  • Then the results will be sent to the BNCAP standing committee for approval.
  • After approval, BNCAP will publish the crash test result and it will come with a certification from the Central Institute Of Road Transport.

How will the scores be evaluated?

The BNCAP will have tests similar to GNCAP and will be done at a speed of 64kmph. The crash test will include frontal impact, side impact and pole side impact(conducted only on cars that score above 3-star in front impact test). There will also be points for ESP, pedestrian protection and seat belt reminder.

Nitin Gadkari ji stated that Bharat NCAP has already received over 30 requests for testing models. Also, BNCAP will be economical for manufacturers as it will cost only around 60 lakhs, while a similar test overseas would cost 2.5 crores.

  • For some reason, I feel it will be much easier for car companies to bribe and get 5-star ratings now.

Maruti pushing this also adds to the distrust of this standard.
