Electric car sales are slowly and steadily picking up pace. Tata is the leading manufacturer in this segment and that shows in its sales numbers. It has the biggest EV portfolio in the country. So what are the sales figures for its car? What about the other manufacturers? In today’s article, let’s talk about the top 10 electric cars. 

Tata Tiago – 10,695 units

Topping the list is naturally the most affordable EV in the country which is the Tiago EV. The Tiago EV pricing starts from Rs 9.19 lakh and goes to Rs 12.78 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Don’t let the affordable pricing fool you, the Tiago EV comes with loads of features like a 7.0-inch infotainment system, 8-speaker Harman system and automatic climate control. It comes with two battery pack options – 19.2kWh and 24kWh. We also have a 45kWh motor or a 55kWh motor. Feature-wise, it comes with 7-inch infotainment, 8-speaker sound system, automatic climate control etc. Tata sold 10,695 units of the Tiago in Q2 2023. 

Tata Nexon – 5,072 units

Before the Tiago, Nexon used to top this list with ease. Now it is playing second fiddle to its smaller sibling. Still, 5,072 units is quite a good number for a Rs 15 lakh car. The advantage of the Nexon EV is that it is a tried & tested product and also offers a lot of features. It comes with Prime (312km) and Max (453km) variants to tap into a wider audience base. The pricing range of the Nexon Prime starts from Rs 15.48 lakh and goes to Rs 18.31 lakh, while the pricing range of the Nexon Max starts from Rs 17.57 lakh and goes to Rs 20.76 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Top 10 electric cars – Tata Tigor – 3,257 units

The top-3 spots are captured by Tata, showcasing its dominance in the EV segment. The Tigor is popular as it offers almost everything the Tiago has but with a boot. So people looking for that extra space prefer the Tigor EV. It comes with a claimed range of 315km and real-world range of 200 to 220km. Tata sold 3,257 units of the Tigor EV in Q2 2023. The XUV400 is priced Rs 13.24 lakh and goes to Rs 14.55 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Mahindra XUV400 – 2,234 units

Mahindra is still finding its feet in the EV segment. For the brand, the XUV400 is more like a stop-gap product till its Born Electric cars are launched. The XUV400 is longer than the XUV300 offering more space in the interior. Also, it comes with a claimed range of 456km, so real-world range should be around the 300km to 350km. Mahindra sold 2,234 units of the XUV400 in Q2 2023. The XUV400 is priced Rs 17.03 lakh and goes to Rs 20.21 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

MG Comet – 1,914 units

The Comet has done fairly well considering its unique design and size. It is the smallest car in India, with an overall length of 2.9m. MG has targeted a premium audience by giving it a 10.25-inch infotainment system with another 10.25-inch screen housing the digital instrument cluster. It is a proper city car with a claimed range of 230km and real-world range of approximately 150km to 170km. MG sold 1,914 units of the Comet EV in Q2 2023. The Comet is priced Rs 8.42 lakh and goes to Rs 10.50 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

MG ZS EV – 1,747 units

The second MG car on the list is the ZS EV. The ZS EV was one of the first mass-market EVs in the country. What’s so special about the ZS EV? The ZS EV comes with a premium interior and is overall a complete product. It has a claimed range of 461km and should deliver a real-world range of 350km to 370km. MG sold 1,747 units of the ZS EV in Q2 2023. The MG ZS EV is priced Rs 24.85 lakh and goes to Rs 29.06 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Citroen is another manufacturer testing out the waters in the EV segment. Earlier this year, it launched the eC3 the electrified version of the C3. It comes with a 29.2kWh battery pack paired with a 56bhp motor. This combination gives it a claimed range of 320km. You can expect a real-world range of 225 to 250kms. Citroen sold 576 units of the eC3 in Q2 2023. The BYD Atto-3 is priced Rs 12.20 lakh and goes to Rs 13.17 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Hyundai IONIQ-5 – 449 units

Hyundai didn’t start quite well in the EV space with the Kona. However, now it is working on a top-down approach with the IONIQ-5. Unlike the EV6, the IONIQ-5 comes through the CBU route helping Hyundai price it more competitively. Also in terms of range, the IONIQ-5 comes with a claimed range of 631km. This should give it a real-world range of 400 to 450km. Hyundai sold 449 units of the IONIQ-5 in Q2 2023. The IONIQ-5 only comes with one variant option priced at Rs 48.73 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

BYD Atto 3 – 412 units

BYD is one of the biggest EV manufacturers in the world. In India, it sells the Atto 3 and e6. The Atto-3 has naturally more buyers than the e6 due to more reachable pricing. It comes with a claimed range of 521km and should give a real-world range of 250 to 400km. For a manufacturer that doesn’t even manufacture here the BYD is selling in decent numbers. The BYD Atto-3 is priced Rs 35.96 lakh and goes to Rs 36.48 lakh. BYD sold 412 units of the Atto 3 in Q2 2023.

Kia’s only EV in the country EV6 has also crept into this list. The Kia EV6 is one of the most unique-looking cars in the country. It is expensive at a starting price of Rs 65 lakhs, but people still prefer to buy it due to its advanced features and high motor specs. The EV6 has claimed range of 708km ARAI and should give a real-world range of 450km to 500km. Kia sold 279 units of the EV6 in Q2 2023. The Kia EV is priced from Rs 64.46 lakh and goes to Rs 69.70 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
