Is Maruti going to launch the WagonR EV?

The EV revolution is taking place at its own pace in the Indian market. All manufacturers are now warming up to the idea of EVs being the future and are working on their EV models. Even manufacturers like Maruti, which has been reluctant to bring EVs, showcased the eVX concept at the Auto Expo of 2023. But what happened to the WagonR EV it was testing? Will it ever be launched? In today’s article, let’s talk about the WagonR EV launch! 

Status

In 2020 and 2021, the WagonR EV would be regularly spotted testing around Maruti’s plant in Gurgaon. Since then, the frequency has dropped drastically. It was spotted testing in 2022 too, but only a couple of times. In 2022, the spied car looked like a production-spec model with some distinctive things different to the ICE-WagonR. However, since then, the car hasn’t been spotted in testing. 

Maruti’s plan

Last year, reports started coming that Maruti had axed the WagonR EV project in favour of its mid-size EV. We all know that this mid-sized EV is the eVX unveiled at the Auto Expo 2023. So why has Maruti axed the WagonR? The reason behind this was the pricing of the WagonR EV. Maruti doesn’t think it can price the WagonR aggressively, keeping in mind profitability. 

WagonR EV launch – Will we ever see it?

Now this is tricky to answer; Maruti has clearly stated that it favours bringing the production version of the eVX. However, the eVX is still a couple of years away from launch. So it should make sense for Maruti to launch the WagonR EV to work as a stop-gap before the eVX is launched. But for that to happen, Maruti will have to see clear demand for an affordable EV as well as better infrastructure. Will that happen in 2024? Only time will tell.
