Maruti is going hard in the SUV segment in the country. In 2022, it launched the updated Brezza and new Grand Vitara. Now in 2023, it has showcased the Jimny 5-door and Fronx. Maruti still lacks a 7-seater SUV option to take on the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, and Tata Safari. To counter this, Maruti is working on a new car that will be essentially a 7-seater Grand Vitara. In today’s article, let’s talk about this Rs 16 lakh Maruti SUV.

7-seater Grand Vitara

Maruti currently lacks a 7-seater SUV in its lineup. It plans to rebadge the Innova HyCross, but that will sit a segment above. To fill this gap, the brand is working on a 7-seater Grand Vitara. Maruti has already started the development of this car and has codenamed it Y17. It will help Maruti take on the Hyundai Alcazar and to some extent, the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.

Changes

The 7-seater Grand Vitara will not be the same car as the 5-seater option. For starters, it is expected to get a longer wheelbase to accommodate the extra row of seats. What about design changes? Maruti could slightly tweak the design to differentiate the two cars. Engine specifications could remain the same, but Maruti will have to change the position of the hybrid setup to accommodate the third row. Feature-wise, we can expect it to come with some new features like ADAS, powered driver seats, front parking sensors, etc.

We have talked about everything, but what about the launch timeline? For now, the car is currently in the early stages of development. Before the Grand Vitara 7-seater, Maruti plans to launch the badge-engineered Innova HyCross and also the production version of eVX. What about the expected pricing? The Grand 7-seater could be around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh more expensive than the 5-seater model. So we can expect a starting price of Rs 16 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).
