The Maruti Gypsy has been an iconic name in our market. It was Maruti’s entry into the world of rugged off-roading, and it’s safe to say it has been quite a success. Maruti had to discontinue the Gypsy due to tightening safety and emissions norms. It still makes the Gypsy in limited quantities for the Army. But will it ever come back for the ordinary public? Yes, it could. In today’s article, let’s talk about the new Maruti Gypsy.

Gypsy legacy

New Maruti Gypsy

The Maruti Gypsy was introduced in December 1985. It was quite popular with law enforcement due to its rugged nature. Initially, it was available as a soft-top, but later on, Maruti introduced a hard-top version. Maruti discontinued the Gypsy in 2018 but kept the production line for the Army. The last recorded price of the Gypsy was Rs 7.49 lakh.

Jimny as Gypsy?

New Maruti Gypsy

The original Gypsy was based on the second-generation Suzuki Jimny. So considering the popularity of the Gypsy nameplate in India, Maruti could name the upcoming 5-door Jimny as Gypsy. It will help Maruti to invoke nostalgia in people. Considering its 4×4 capabilities and boxy nature, people will also accept the new Gypsy as a successor to the original model.

Other details

New Maruti Gypsy

Maruti is already testing the Jimny 5-door (probably Gypsy) in India. It will be a lot more practical than the 3-door Jimny. What else do we know? The Jimny 5-door could come with a new engine option. It could come with a 1.4-litre turbo engine or a 1.5-litre turbo engine option. Maruti could also give it a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine on the lower variants. 4×4 and 4×2 could be optional. What about the features? Maruti could give it practical features like automatic AC, a premium sound system and rear AC vents etc.
