The battle of compact SUVs is never ending as more and more products have started to enter. But, if we talk about it from the safety point of view, the Nexon and XUV300 are two of the considerable products. The former is available with a plethora of variants whereas the latter has just got updated with a TurboSport variant. Moreover, if you are planning to buy a safe sub-compact SUV with an AMT gearbox, these two filter down as your options. So, which one should you go for? Find out more below.

The Nexon is based on the ‘X1’ platform from Tata. The current facelifted model is based on the same which gets design cues like a sloping roofline, high ground clearance, arrow-styled design elements, dual-tone paint schemes and more. It sits on the dimensions of 3993mm in length, 1811mm in width and 1606mm in height. It gets a ground clearance of 209mm.

If we talk about the XUV300, it is extensively based on the SsangYong Tivoli which is sold in global markets. This has resulted in the car being the widest, safest, and most spacious in terms of cabin space. However, it does get comparatively less cargo space at 257 litres. It measures 3995 mm in length, 1821 mm in width and 1627 mm in height. The ground of the XUV300 is 180mm.

Features

Both these cars get a healthy list of features. However, the car which gets more is the Nexon. When compared to the XUV300, it gets more premium features like a digital instrument cluster, more premium interiors, a better infotainment system, ventilated seats, and more. Moreover, you also get a plethora of exterior and interior design schemes in Nexon with its Kaziranga, Dark, Jet, etc type of editions. On the other hand, if talk about the XUV300, it gets features like dual-zone climate control, Steering modes, auto-dimming IRVM, mild hybrid technology, etc.

XUV300 AMT or Nexon AMT

Both these cars are available with 1 petrol and 1 diesel engine option. Moreover, they also get the option of an AMT gearbox. If we talk about the petrol option, Nexon offers a punchy engine with the 1.2-litre turbo petrol that makes 118bhp and 170Nm of torque. Now, if we move on to the XUV300, it also gets a 1.2-litre turbo petrol that makes 109bhp and 200Nm. If you want more outright pickup and performance then you should look at the XUV300. The XUV300 TurboSport is faster but does not come with a AMT unit.

Talking about the diesel engine, the XUV300 is the clear winner with its class-leading diesel motor. It churns out 115bhp and 300Nm of torque which is even more than what bigger SUVs like the Creta or Seltos offer. On the other hand, if talk about the Nexon diesel it makes 108bhp and 260Nm of torque which is less than the Mahindra.

What about the AMT question? The Nexon AMT is to put it in plain words – cumbersome and less refined the XUV300. It’s jerky in some situations and cannot make up it’s mind when climbing up hills and inclines. The XUV300 stands out as the more refined and smoother unit. It too is not as sharp as a regular torque convertor, smooth as a CVT or quick as a DCT but is better than the Nexon AMT.

Which one should you get?

If you see the Nexon – it maintains a forte if features are the talking point whereas if you want more performance then XUV300 is the answer. Though you might feel the usual AMT peculiarities in both cars, Mahindra’s power-packed engines do cover it to some extent. Another point are their prices. The prices of the Nexon AMT starts at Rs 10.98lakh (on-road, Mumbai) and the XUV300 AMT starts at Rs 12.37lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for the petrol variant.
