Hyundai has given a fresh update to its sub-compact SUV – Venue. The car now comes with the addition of new features, an updated design and a sporty ‘N-line’ variant. However, the South Korean manufacturer still doesn’t offer the ‘diesel automatic’ variant. But, with the BS6 Phase 2 norms coming into action, Hyundai can offer the Venue diesel automatic.  Let’s understand how it is possible.

Hyundai Venue diesel – BS6 Phase 2 update

Hyundai has decided to pull the plug off the diesel engine of the Hyundai i20. The reason is the Phase 2 norms as it requires additional costs for updating it according to the same. Also, the sales of the diesel i20 are comparatively less than its petrol counterpart, it is uncertain that Hyundai might bring a more expensive i20 diesel in future. Moreover, this is the same 1.5-litre diesel motor that is available on the Venue. Even if they upgrade it for the Venue, it would be the only car getting this motor. So, this theory is also deprived of any sense. So, what can Hyundai do?

Hyundai Venue diesel to be more powerful?

The South Korean car maker offers 2 iterations of its 1.5-litre diesel mill. One is soon to be discontinued from the i20 and the other can be seen on the Creta and Alcazar. The major difference between them is the former gets a wastegate turbocharger (high-performance turbo) and the latter gets a variable geometry turbo (high performance even at low speeds).

What Hyundai could do is it can simply give the Creta’s 1.5-litre diesel engine to the Venue rather than investing in huge costs to update its current motor. Moreover, the current engine does not offer an automatic option and is less powerful as well. If Venue gets the Creta’s engine, it would be more powerful and it would get a torque converter automatic option.

One interesting thing to know is Hyundai’s sister brand – Kia, does offer the powerful 1.5-litre VGT diesel engine in its sub-compact SUV -Sonet.

What else can we expect?

From the above thesis, we can expect that Hyundai might discontinue the current diesel engine from the Venue and give it the Creta diesel engine. This would save up their costs for upgrading it for a single car (Venue) as i20 is leaving off the diesel. If this happens, Venue would get the 1.5-litre diesel with VGT (113bhp and 240Nm of torque) with an automatic torque convertor gearbox and a 6-speed manual.

If Hyundai plans to bring this iteration of the Venue, it could be a powerful package considering a better engine and the car’s sub-compact dimensions. Though the prices are likely to be on the higher side, you will be getting a great overall package.
