The Indian automotive market is growing at a rapid pace. More people are buying cars than ever before. Though this is a good thing, the road infrastructure also needs to develop at a similar pace. Thankfully, we are seeing the change with so many new expressways and highways being built. However, these highways don’t come for free, and the government sets up tollbooths to collect tolls for the equivalent development. However, these toll collection points result in long queues which hamper the movement on highways. The government is however looking to put an end to this with a completely new system and technology. So, in today’s article, we talk about the Indian highways and this new technology.

New plan

Recently, Union minister for Roads and Transport, Nitin Gadkari, talked about the need to replace toll plazas with cameras. How will cameras help? These cameras will capture the number plate of the car & deduct the necessary toll amount from the bank account linked to the number plate. Now, how will this work? Cameras will be set up at multiple entry and exit points to the highways. The entry and exit point of a specific vehicle will be noted and money would be deducted based on the distance covered. All-in-all, this scheme will follow pay-per-use model. For this to work, standard company-fitted number plates are essential on all vehicles. If the plan works, we could see no traffic choke points, ultimately resulting in a more smoother traffic flow on the highways.

End of Fastag?

The new plan is expected to replace the Fastag procedure. Even though Fastags are quicker than manual collection, they haven’t been able to completely solve the issue. Even with the Fastag, you could see long congestion of traffic in various places. The main reason being the scanners not working properly or low balance, adding to the hassle.

Indian highways – Other prominent projects

Several big road projects are being undertaken all over India. Some of the prominent ones include the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway connecting the two prominent cities. Another important project is the Ganga Expressway being constructed in Uttar Pradesh. As the name suggests, the expressway will run parallel to the Ganga river, connecting a lot of major cities in Uttar Pradesh. The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is another prominent project.
