Mahindra is launching one blockbuster product after another. Last year we saw the launch of the XUV700, and last month Mahindra launched the much anticipated Scorpio-N. Unlike most other brands, Mahindra as a manufacturer offers good performance and quite a few important features even on base variants. So, out of the XUV700 and Scorpio-N, which SUV’s base model should you pick? In today’s article on Mahindra XUV700 vs the Scorpio-N, let’s compare their base variant.

Note – The XUV700 base variant is denoted as MX whereas Scorpio-N’s base variant is denoted as Z2.

The XUV700 is 4,695mm in length, 1,890mm in width & 1,755mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2750mm and has a ground clearance of 200mm. In comparison, the Scorpio-N is 4,662mm long, 1,917mm wide & 1,857mm tall. It sits on a wheelbase of 2750mm and has a ground clearance of 187mm. Both the cars are quite evenly matched with the XUV700 being slightly longer and the Scorpio-N being wider and taller. Another catch is that the base variant XUV700 comes with a 5-seater configuration only, while the Scorpio-N is a proper 7-seater.

The specifications are where the comparison gets interesting between both the cars. Both the cars come with the same 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and 2.2-litre diesel engine options. Also, both the base variants come with only a manual gearbox option. So what’s the difference? Mahindra has tuned the engines differently. The XUV700 petrol engine is capable of producing 197bhp & 380Nm of torque, while the diesel produces 153bhp & 360Nm of torque. Also, the XUV700 MX variant is front-wheel drive and comes based on a monocoque chassis.

In comparison, the Scorpio-N petrol engine is capable of producing 200bhp & 370Nm of torque. On the other hand, the diesel engine produces 130bhp & 300Nm of torque. The Scorpio-N is a rear-wheel-drive car and comes based on a body-on-frame platform. Also, Mahindra has given the Scorpio-N Penta Link Suspension with WATT’s Linkage.

The Mahindra XUV700 MX variant comes with a decent amount of features. It is not bare-bones like other manufacturers’ base models. So what are the features? It comes with an 8.0-inch infotainment system, Android Auto, smart door handles, adjustable headrests for four passengers, four speakers, USB in 1st & C-type in 2nd row and electrically adjustable headlamps.

In comparison, the Scorpio-N also gets a decent amount of features. It gets a touchscreen infotainment, electric power steering, 2nd row AC vents and steering audio controls.

Pricing

XUV700 vs Scorpio-N base

The pricing of the XUV700 MX variants starts from Rs 15.85 lakh and goes to Rs 16.73 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). In comparison, the pricing for the Scorpio Z2 variants starts from Rs 14.46 lakh and goes to Rs 15.30 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). A thing to note here is that the Scorpio-N prices are introductory for the first 25,00 bookings. After that, the prices of the Scorpio-N are expected to increase. So the Scorpio-N could start at similar prices as the XUV700 once the introductory time period ends.

Both the base variants are quite evenly matched, so the final decision could boil down to which one you prefer. If you are looking for a proper, rugged seven-seater then the Scorpio-N is your option. Also, the body-on-frame chassis is more suitable for off-roading. So who should consider the XUV700? Someone looking for a bit more sophistication and a bit more features. Also, the XUV700 gets a slightly more powerful diesel engine. Both the SUVs are purposeful in their own ways. Take a test drive to decide which complements your personality the best.
