Maruti leads the hatchback segment in India while Tata leads the SUV segment. After the Tata Nexon, the next highest-selling car is the Tata Punch. The strongest points that go in favour of the Punch are its SUVish design, aggressive pricing as well as lack of competition. Currently, no car directly competes with the Punch. However, Maruti has plans to bring in a strong Punch rival. So, what are we discussing today? Today, we will be discussing the Punch rival’s expected launch timeline. Can you take a guess what could this car be? We will be talking about the new Ignis facelift and its launch. Yes, this is the car that Maruti will work on to take on the Tata Punch. Moreover, we will look at other details of the upcoming rival including specifications, design, pricing, etc.

New Ignis facelift launch timeline and pricing

New Ignis facelift launch

Maruti markets the Ignis as an ‘Urban SUV’ and not as a hatchback. Maruti will be looking to modify the facelift in a way such that it takes on the Tata micro-SUV firmly. Although the brand has not stated anything as far as launch details are concerned, but we expect Maruti to unveil the new Ignis at the Auto Expo 2023 which will be held in January. As far as pricing is concerned, we expect the new Ignis to be priced aggressively against the Tata Punch. Taking the upcoming six airbag rule into consideration, we expect the pricing of the new Ignis to start from somewhere around Rs 7 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai).

Design

The new Maruti Ignis is expected to receive significant design changes that could give it an even bolder look, something that will help it take on the Punch. The bonnet might be raised along with an increase in ground clearance. Other dimensions are also expected to be revised. With enhanced dimensions, we expect the interiors space to see a slight improvement as well.

Specifications

Like most new Maruti cars, we expect the new Ignis to get an updated engine. There were rumours around that the Ignis might receive the 1.2-litre Dual Jet engine makes 89bhp and 113Nm of torque. This engine could come mated to a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic AMT gearbox. With these power figures, it would give a tough competition to the Punch which makes 86bhp & 113Nm of torque.

With Maruti’s push towards features now, we expect this car to receive some significant updates as well. Maruti could update the Ignis with features like an improved 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, improved connected car tech, new seating & upholstery, etc. Maruti could add more features depending on how firmly it plans to take on the Tata SUV.
