Ambassador to make a comeback as an EV in 2024?

Rarely do we see one product making such an impact on the industry as a whole but this was exactly what the Ambassador achieved to do in the 90’s. The Ambassador’s brand name is known to everyone in India. After a long decorated journey in the Indian market, the Ambassador had to be finally axed in 2013-14 due to poor sales and financial issues. The iconic product however continued to live in people’s hearts. This is the reason why Ambassador will be soon brought back. Yes, you read that right. A new version of Ambassador is coming in 2024. New development

The HM Ambassador is looking to make a comeback in an improved avatar. How will Hindustan Motors do this? The new Ambassador will be built by a joint venture of Hind Motor Financial Corporation of India (a subsidiary of Hindustan Motors) and French carmaker, Peugeot. So why is Peugeot reviving the Ambassador? Peugeot bought the Ambassador rights from Hindustan Motors in 2017 for Rs 80 crores. 

New Ambassador 2024 – Modern Amby

The Ambassador was known for its comfortable ride quality and spacious interiors. Hindustan Motors & Peugeot will look to replicate this quality in the new Ambassador as well. Peugeot will look to bring modern features to the Ambassador to attract new buyers. According to reports, the mechanical bits of the engine are already in advanced stages of development. The new Amby will be coming in as an ICE-powered car first. However, since the future will be held by EVs, we expect an Ambassador EV to be a part of the plan as well.

Future EV plans

Aside from the new Ambassador, Hindustan Motors has ambitious plans for the coming times. It is currently in talks with a European company (name not disclosed) for a joint venture to develop EVs. The initial investment would be around Rs 300-400 crores. HM is first looking to enter the electric two-wheeler segment and then the four-wheeler segment. This joint venture will use Hindustan Motors 295 acres factory in Uttarpara, West Bengal.
